Job Summary

• Work as a clinical expert and role model and provide practice development and leadership in a multi-disciplinary environment.
• Use expert knowledge to investigate and manage patients referred for specialist fertility treatment
• Ensure that all interventions are based on scientific rationale, evidence based standards of care and current best practice guidelines and pathways.
• Demonstrate highly developed and advanced specialist knowledge and skills through innovative practice providing increased levels of autonomy.
• Support the Matron and wider members of the Divisional Management team in achieving the strategic objectives for the Care Group and the Trust.
• It is expected that the individual will work as a clinical expert and role model and provide practice development and leadership in a multi-disciplinary environment. They will act as a Specialist Fertility Nurse Practitioner
• The post holder maybe required to work within any of the satellite or transport centres as required
• Provide autonomous Nurse-Led Fertility Clinic’s, Embryo Transfers and Trans-Vaginal and/or abdominal Ultrasound Scanning.
• Ensure that all four pillars of advanced practice are covered in the work undertaken in practice.

Key Relationships

• 1 Work within trust policies and protocols and accountability to ensure that all practice complies within their remit are complying with Trust and NMC guidance and standards. 2 Act as an advocate for the patient, demonstrating and establishing a relationship of trust with patients and their families. 3 Communicates and agrees with the patient, their determined plan of care in accordance to National and local guidelines and best practice at all times 4 Work with the multi-professional team including the senior nursing and medical management team, and other professionals from transport or satellite centres. 5 Maintain efficient and effective communication and working relationships with other professional groups and staff working within the trust 6 Identify act and liaise with inter agencies regarding safeguarding issues 7 Assist with orientation programmes which familiarise new members of staff with the organisational and clinical demands of the service. 8 Supervise the work of the non-registered staff, including nursing and medical students in conjunction with Higher Institutes of Education 9 Act as an ambassador for the organisation at all times

Main Duties & Responsibilities

• At all times work in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct. Ensure the nursing activities within the service and clinic reach the required professional standard. Coordinate the clinic teams, identify and monitor care priorities and organise workload for identified group of patients in the Division
• Ensure all interventions are based on scientific rationale, evidence-based standards of care and practice guidelines.
• Guided by clearly defined Trust policies, protocols or codes of conduct- Work is managed rather than supervised and results outcomes are assessed at agreed intervals
• Responsible for initiating appropriate and timely consultation and / or referral when the problem exceeds nursing expertise.
• Exercise a high degree of personal and professional autonomy, critical judgement, acting as an expert practitioner and role model, demonstrating advanced skills and knowledge to professional staff and patients.
• Ensure that accurate and comprehensive nursing records are maintained using appropriate documentation, adhering to the NMC Code of Conduct and Trust policy, pertaining to patient confidentiality, data protection and in line with HFEA / RCOG guidelines.
• Motivate colleagues and self to deliver high standards of care in line with the clinic philosophy and Trust strategic objective. Advise junior staff and students on care strategies and provide rationale and teaching of evidence-based care to other team members.
• Deliver skilled, high quality, expert and evidence-based nursing care to all patients and their partners attending the department. To undertake nursing interventions consistent with evidence-based practice, transferring and applying knowledge and skills to meet the patient and partner needs. To deliver care in accordance with identified standards and contribute toward the monitoring and development of standards
• To be responsible for assessing and recognising emergencies in this clinical speciality, able to interpret information and take appropriate action and lead others to do so. Manage challenging and difficult situations with a professional and emotionally appropriate response, ensuring the needs of the patient remain paramount.
• To be personally competent in the use of all equipment and technology in the area and ensuring that it is always serviced and kept in good order. Responsible for ensuring that all staff within the area is also competent and that all training is recorded appropriately according to Trust Policy and NMC guidelines.
• To work in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to ensure co-ordination of appropriate inputs to a patients treatment. To be actively involved in referring to other agencies and specialities, Therapy services, Safeguarding Team, etc.
• Participate and assist in setting standards of patient care and clinical pathways based on sound research findings.
• To be competent and abide by statutory rules and regulations concerning the safe custody and administration of drugs to all patients.
• Work as part of the multidisciplinary team in supporting patients and their partners during the delivery of bad or distressing news. Be able to give and manage the breaking of bad / distressing news and ensure the patients and their partners are treated with sensitivity and responsive of their needs.
• Be aware of the psychological, social and emotional needs of patients and their partners in relation to undergoing fertility treatment and effectively minimise their stress.
• Undertakes relevant clinical skills and functions commensurate with the role requirements, following appropriate training and assessment and assist in the training of junior staff
• Monitor and action as required standards of cleanliness and the patient environment within the clinical area.
• Demonstrate awareness when eliciting sensitive information from patients in relation to their condition and treatment.
• Communicates health advice and instruction appropriately utilising evidence-based rationale.
• To analyse and interpret national recommendation i.e. NSF / NICE /RCOG guidance and formulate action plans to achieve compliance from a nursing perspective.
• Interpret the impact of public health data / information in evaluating patients needs, pattern of disease and effectiveness of interventions / programme of care.
• To promote expert practice, facilitating the development of others by acting as a role model, mentor and supervisor in practice, also providing advice to the multi-professional team across the range of agencies.
• The post holder may also be required to work within the transport or satellite units if required to do so.
• To always comply with any regulations issued by the Trust especially those governing Health and Safety at Work and Infection Prevention and Control to ensure that any defects which may affect safety at work are brought to the attention of the appropriate manager.
• Prescribe and review medication for therapeutic effectiveness, appropriate to patient needs and in accordance with evidence-based practice and national and practice protocols, and within scope of practice. Provide information and advice on prescribed or over-the-counter medication on medication regimens, side-effects and interactions
