Job overview

JVG is a 22-bedded ward that supports patients with delayed transfers of care. The team manages complex discharges and plays an essential role in maintaining safe and effective patient flow.

The post holder will lead, manage and support the ward team, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care. The role carries 24-hour responsibility for the clinical area.

The ward supports patients aged over 65, primarily with acute frailty and related conditions. You will ensure that each patient receives the assessment, care and treatment required to promote health and support safe transition along their care pathway.

Success in this role depends on strong collaborative working. You will work closely with colleagues across multidisciplinary and speciality teams, including Consultants, the Head of Nursing, Matrons, Ward Managers and the Site Management team. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential, as is the ability to remain professional and calm when managing complex or challenging situations in a busy environment.

You will work in partnership with the Matron to oversee designated areas and ensure the highest standards of care.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide clear leadership for the ward team and maintain 24-hour responsibility for the clinical area.
  • Ensure the delivery of safe, effective and high-quality care for patients over 65 with acute frailty and complex discharge needs.
  • Support patient flow by progressing discharge plans and resolving delays in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Coordinate daily staffing, workload and escalation, ensuring appropriate skill mix is in place.
  • Work closely with Consultants, Matrons, Site Management and other clinical teams to ensure joined-up care.
  • Lead on staff supervision, performance, wellbeing and professional development.
  • Maintain compliance with clinical standards, Trust policies and evidence-based practice.
  • Contribute to quality improvement and service development across the ward.
  • Collaborate with the Matron, Service Manager and Practice Development Team to ensure high standards of assessment and care.

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years’ post registration
  • At least 2 years’ experience within MfOP at a senior level (Band 6 or above)

  • Management and development of staff

Qualifications

  • Current First Level Nursing and Midwifery Council Registration
  • Post registration evidence of further training
  • Evidence of degree level study
