Job overview

Montpellier Low Secure Recovery Unit is a forensic 12 bed all male ward for patients with enduring mental illness who are detained under the Mental Health Act 1983. We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated individual to lead a multi-disciplinary team with an ability to plan, implement and audit a range of activities, interventions and initiatives for service users with a serious and enduring mental illness. The Engagement, Activity & Physical Health (EAP) agenda is an integral part of service user’s recovery on the Montpellier Unit. The main goals of the agenda are to help maintain and increase service user’s level of functioning, promote social inclusion, support prevention of physical health problems developing alongside promoting good health and wellbeing and reducing restrictive practice. You will be working as part of the EAP team as well as working alongside a multi-disciplinary team & other health and social care professionals.

Main duties of the job

  • To be responsible for the operational management of the Engagement Activity and Physical Health therapy department.
  • To provide leadership, appraisal and supervision to other staff within the team and act as a focal point for problem solving and maintaining clinical standards.
  • To assist the Unit Manager with the development and provision of services, primarily in the clinical operational management and development of the EAP team.
  • To provide physical health assessment and treatment in in-patient settings according to local and national policy.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Utilise the conceptual framework of the EAP Team to underpin clinical practice.
  • Select, apply and advise on EAP specific assessments and to manage a caseload of clients with complex health needs.
  • Plan and implement specialised EAP individual/group interventions to achieve agreed therapeutic goals.
  • Monitor, evaluate and modify specialised treatment using appropriate outcome measures to ensure effectiveness of intervention.
  • Attend relevant clinical and team meetings, and provide verbal and written progress reports as required.
  • Act as clinical lead for up to four service users.
  • Maintain documentation in accordance with trust policy.
  • Participate in regular clinical supervision.
  • Use complex and advanced clinical reasoning and expertise to provide a consultative role to other professionals within the department.

Research and Development Responsibilities

  • Develop the EAP service, using knowledge of and skills in contemporary theory driven, and evidence based practice.
  • Work with the Unit Manager and other leads to deliver the targets and developments outlined within the EAP Team professional standards by engaging in audit, research, etc.
  • Promote a culture of continuing professional development within the department.
  • Participate and develop research and/or audit activity related to the EAP Team, presenting and sharing it locally and nationally within the secure network.

Managerial/Leadership

  • Demonstrate effective leadership skills, ability to organise complex information and prioritise workload of self and team/supervisees
  • Recruit, retain, manage and develop a cohesive team/staff, in consultation with the Unit Manager.
  • Ensure and provide managerial and clinical supervision for EAP team staff and volunteers working with the EAP team.
  • Ensure provision of high-quality student placements within the department.
  • Represent the interests of the EAP team at hospital wide meetings.

Professional

  • Comply with British Association of Sport and Exercise Scientists Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct (2000) and local and national standards of practice.
  • To demonstrate a commitment to continuing professional development through participation in internal and external development opportunities and maintenance of a portfolio.
  • Maintain professional links with CCQI low secure network, NAPICU, BASES colleagues and an awareness of new developments in the profession.
  • Foster high standards of practice in accordance with local and national standards CCQI, NAPICU and BASES.
  • Supporting clients, carers and staff to deal with difficult, challenging and complex situations through regular supervision and debriefing

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • Registered Mental Health Nurse, Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist.
  • Ability to complete Prevention & Management of Aggression Training (PMVA)

Desirable

  • Recognised management development course
  • Teaching and Assessing Certificate or Accredited Clinical Supervisor

LENGTH AND / OR NATURE OF EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Substantial proven post basic training in an inpatient or crisis setting.
  • Medical Emergency Response Team Training
  • Ability to complete Prevention & Management of Aggression Training (PMVA)

Desirable

  • Report writing skills

PROFESSIONAL / MANAGERIAL / SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE

Essential

  • Post graduate studies in the field of mental health or related practice
  • Mental Health inpatient risk training
  • Detailed knowledge and ability to apply and teach colleagues and students
  • Well defined leadership skills

Desirable

  • Knowledge of ‘Safe Wards’ and the Essence of Care Standards
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the MHA and legal aspects of mental health care
