An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Surgical Secretary to join our friendly and supportive team at Belford Hospital.

You will provide comprehensive secretarial and administrative support to consultants and clinical teams, playing a key role in the management of patient pathways. Responsibilities include outpatient and inpatient waiting list management, theatre booking, audio-typing, preparation of clinical correspondence, maintaining accurate patient records and liaising with patients and healthcare professionals across NHS Highland.

The role requires a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. You will support data quality processes by using spreadsheets and digital systems to validate patient information, monitor waiting lists and help ensure compliance with national waiting time standards, including Treatment Time Guarantee requirements.

Applicants should have significant administrative or medical secretarial experience, knowledge of medical terminology and excellent organisational and communication skills. You should be confident using Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and able to work independently whilst managing competing priorities in a busy environment.

Experience of TrakCare, waiting list management and data quality work is desirable.

Essential Requirements

  • Educated to SCQF Level 6 or equivalent, or equivalent experience.
  • Significant administrative or medical secretarial experience.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Excel.
  • Ability to maintain and validate accurate information using spreadsheets and databases.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.

Desirable Requirements

  • HNC Administration & IT or equivalent.
  • Experience of NHS patient administration systems, including TrakCare.
  • Experience of waiting list management and data quality reviews.
  • Knowledge of NHS waiting time standards.
