Job overview

The Specialist Nurse Safeguarding Children/Child Protection Advisor, is an important role within the wider Safeguarding Children Team.  The Post holder provides expert advice to all Trust staff who are worried about the welfare of a child.  They help support the duty system within the Trust advising and supporting in a calm and contained manner.

The post holder will be a key contact between the Trust and wider multi-agency partners, sharing information and supporting the multi-agency partners to safeguard children.

Main duties of the job

The Post holder  will provide expert safeguarding children advice and guidance to Trust staff via the trust single point of contact phone and email system.  They will support the MARAC process for children young people and unborn babies.

The postholder will also provide health information and guidance, using information sharing principles, to inform statutory safeguarding processes.  They will also be integral to providing supervision to staff, both formal and informal, and teaching, both formal and informal.

Person specification

Experience and Knowledge

Essential

  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience working at Band 6 level or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience of interagency working in relation to child protection
  • Provide excellent leadership and be a role model to all Trust staff by delivering high quality care as an expert practitioner within safeguarding children.
  • Good understanding of the current issues relevant to safeguarding children’s agenda
  • Ability to recognize and analyse vulnerability and risk in relation to children and adults.
  • Experience in the delivery of education and provision of support to staff, to recognize, act upon and accurately report/record safeguarding concerns.
  • To provide support to staff with the assessment and analysis of risk, including completion of quality referrals to Children’s Social Care.
  • To educate, advise and support staff in wider safeguarding subjects, e.g. Domestic abuse and child exploitation.
  • To provide specialist safeguarding children’s advice to all staff groups within the Trust.
  • Trained and practicing in safeguarding children supervision

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Registered Nurse (any part of the register); Registered Midwife; Allied Health Professional or Registered Nurse with SCPHN Health Visitor/School Nurse.
  • A minimum of 2 years post registration experience in child protection/safeguarding children
  • Specialist training and experience relating to safeguarding children.
  • Relevant teaching and assessing qualification or demonstrable experience
  • Currently practicing as a safeguarding children supervisor
  • Commitment to pursue masters level education

Desirable

  • Recognized teaching qualification
  • Master’s level education in child protection or other relevant subject desirable.
  • Degree level qualification or for this interim role commitment to working towards attaining a degree
