Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and dynamic Band 7 Senior Sister / Charge Nurse to join the Cardiac High Dependency Unit within the Cardiovascular and Thoracic (CV&T) care group.

ABOUT THE TEAM

CHDU is a 20-bedded cardiac high dependency unit. The unit caters for mixed speciality adult patients including cardiac surgery, congenital heart disease, thoracic and cardiology patients requiring specialist high dependency care. You will join our friendly and dedicated CHDU team, within a care group which has a local, national and international reputation for delivering expert cardiothoracic care to our patients. Clinical expertise is at the forefront of making sure that patients have the best clinical outcome and receive care that is current and evidence based. The CV&T care group at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust leads the way for adult cardiac patients in:

  • Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI)
  • Complex electrophysiological treatments
  • Heart failure
  • Congenital
  • Cardiac Surgery

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

WHAT YOU’LL DO

As a Senior Sister/Charge Nurse you will be expected to promote the delivery of a high standard of patient-centred care. With the support of the Matron you will analyse, monitor and implement actions that ensure the service delivery is safe and effective in line with the Trust values.

You will be responsible for the daily operational management and service delivery process within the department, along with the line management and development of the nursing team. You will ensure the smooth running of the unit, working as a key decision maker alongside the multi professional team, leading on aspects of clinical care and focusing on patient safety, experience and quality assurance frameworks.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills. They will be educated to a degree level with evidence of on-going education. They must be able to demonstrate a compassionate approach to the care of patients and the public, whilst also possessing the ability to ensure robust clinical operational demands are met.

The varied and complex case mix plus a commitment to role development in a visionary manner makes this an excellent opportunity.

  • 1st Level Registered nurse on relevant part of the NMC Register
  • Recognised mentorship qualification and experience as a Sign Off mentor
  • Degree or working towards
  • Relevant clinical courses
  • Higher Education Institute approved course in supporting learners in practice. Provide evidence of;  Supporting a range of learners in practice  Supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice

Desirable

  • Management Course (or equivalent)

Previous or relevant experience necessary

Essential

  • Evidence of clinical leadership ability
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Evidence of utilising evidence in practice

Desirable

  • Evidence of staff development and succession planning
  • Experience as an NMC sign off mentor or clinical practice assessor.
