Job overview

We are recruiting two Senior Research Nurse to join the Research & Development Team, who shares our vision to be trusted to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients.

Here at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre, our Research Nurses recruit patients to studies via multiple local DGH teams as well as from within the Cancer Centre.

As well as promoting studies to our referral hospitals and recruiting and coordinating the care of our trial participants,  you will also administer some of the research drugs.

You may be required to take responsibility for the safe administration of experimental drugs and for monitoring the expected and unexpected side effects of drugs and other treatment modalities.

In addition, you will receive a High-Cost Area Supplement of 15% of your basic salary, subject to a minimum payment of £4,870 and a maximum payment of £6,137 per annum pro rata.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will coordinate and manage a clinical research portfolio, working collaboratively with the NIHR Clinical Research Network/ENHT and multidisciplinary teams to support patients participating in clinical trials. Responsibilities include screening and identifying eligible patients, maintaining detailed knowledge of study protocols, supporting recruitment in outpatient and inpatient settings, monitoring patient progress, and collecting accurate clinical trial data.

The role also involves acting as a key contact for patients and families by providing information, support, and advocacy to help patients make informed decisions regarding participation in research. Patients may also be referred to appropriate professionals or agencies where necessary.

In addition, the post holder will support research governance activities by assisting with ethics and approval submissions, contributing to protocol reviews, advising on specialised equipment and resources, and ensuring ethical standards are maintained throughout the research process.

The role includes responsibility for the safe administration of experimental treatments and monitoring patients for expected and unexpected side effects.

  • Experience in delivering evidence-based practice
  • Experience of explaining complex concepts to patients in a clear and simplified manner

  • Experience of phlebotomy, cannulation and management of central lines
  • Experience of radiation protection procedures
  • Experience of running concurrent research studies in a healthcare setting with minimal supervision/clinical trials experience
  • Experience related to information retrieval and research application
