Job Summary
The Consultant nurse in Urology will practise a high degree of professional autonomy at an advanced level in the delivery of high quality, safe and effective care.
The Consultant nurse role will blend a significant proportion of direct, higher level clinical care (minimum of 50% of job role) with education, research, service development and evaluation activities. The postholder will exercise advanced knowledge, skill and expertise in the provision of patient management in conjunction with the urology clinical nurse specialists and local and regional urology teams. He / she will work in collaboration with the cancer management team multidisciplinary teams locally and regionally and. The postholder will establish, implement and support the development of Consultant nurse led clinics in response to service need.
The postholder will lead and influence service policy development within SET and at a strategic level whilst continuing to provide a strong clinical commitment and expert advice to clinical colleagues. The Consultant nurse will demonstrate leadership skills. Be a nurse leader in any Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) processes and motivate others and proactively improve quality of cancer care and standards of practice and advanced nursing roles within cancer care.
The postholder should contribute to education at a regional level involving peer review and relevant publications and support and act as clinical advisor to the Urology Specialist nursing team. To support the delivery of a high quality, safe and compassionate healthcare service, all staff are expected to act as a role model to others in all aspects of their work.
Also encompassed within the job plan the post holder will spend 0.2 WTE (1 day per week) in partnership with the Ulster University School of Nursing. Within this time the post-holder will provide academic input and contribute towards educational provision across a range of postgraduate programmes aligned to their areas of expertise,and provide research support for MSc supervision. The post holder will also contribute to research activity, aligned to Palliative and Cancer Care Research Group, including developing or implementing research in practice.
Main Duties / Responsibilities
As a member of the clinical team, the Consultant nurse will
Exercise advanced levels of clinical judgment, knowledge and skill and possess a high degree of personal/professional autonomy to enable complex decision-making.
To be able to clinically risk assess patients pre-operatively and to assess appropriateness of surgical procedure.
To be able to discuss and refer patients to alternative therapeutic interventions if surgery is not appropriate.
To assist in the clinical care of post-operative patients, undertaking patient reviews and providing senior clinical advice ensuring patients receive the most appropriate care based on their clinical need.
To obtain informed consent for specific procedures in line with relevant Trust policies and protocols, ensuring full explanation is given and consent obtained prior to the procedures.
To attend and participate in the urology MDT on regular weekly basis
Demonstrate advanced skills for assessment, diagnosis, treatment, management within the field of practice of urology and make and receive referrals, where appropriate.
Identify and adopt innovative clinical practice models, e.g. implementation and evaluation of new treatments, technologies, and therapeutic techniques.
Use an innovative, person-centred approach to contribute to better outcomes and experience for patients/clients, families, carers or communities.
As an expert, conduct and contribute to systematic reviews of clinical practice.
Act as an educator and contribute to the training and education of others.
Through the formalised university links, provide academic and research support.
Develop and influence professional practice locally, nationally and internationally through the promotion and evaluation of evidence-based practice, research and service development.
Present and contribute to local/national/international professional conferences, special interest groups/working parties, research forums, including dissemination through relevant publications.
Lead and facilitate inter-professional working.

KEY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
1.0 Professional Leadership
1.1 Process complex, sensitive or contentious information in contributing to the development of strategic planning of urology services in partnership with the Assistant Director and Clinical Director for Cancer Services, Director of Nursing, and wider urology MDT.
1.2 Provide professional leadership and advocacy in the care of patients with urology.
1.3 Support and lead staff to develop the urology nursing service, providing a professional and academic role model, and actively supporting and inspiring nurses to develop confidence and clinical skills.
1.4 Inspire colleagues to improve standards and quality of care and to develop professional practice by participating in the development of clinical guidelines and supporting the implementation of local and national guidelines.
1.5 Challenge organisational and professional barriers that limit or inhibit an effective urology service.
1.6 Use cancer nursing expertise as a resource to promote, support and teaching of nurses, other healthcare professionals and junior medical staff.
1.7 Work in collaboration with the Trust’s Governance Facilitator, Practice Education Facilitator and Senior Cancer Managers to foster a culture where urology nurses will:
Develop safe autonomous nursing practice within their scope of practice
Work in partnership with medical colleagues to improve outcomes.
Develop new models of nurse led cancer care.
1.8 Assist in change management for the implementation of innovative care structures. OR Lead on and play a proactive role in implementing innovative ways of working, motivating and change management within cancer services.
1.9 Work with Cancer Management team to develop professional practice locally to meet the needs of the local population and support the strategic direction of the service across the cancer trajectory (prevention, treatment, living with and beyond cancer).
1.X Contribute and influence the cancer care nursing agenda at a local, national and international level.
1.10 Provide specialist urology nursing care advice to the Directorate Team, Director of Nursing and the Trust Board as and when required or requested.
1.11 Promote effective, open, respectful communication amongst professional groups, support staff and women and their families.
2.0 Clinical Management
2.1 To be directly responsible for the line management of urology CNSs across dermatology and plastics, a job plan will be agreed once appointed.
2.2 Work in partnership with the Trust’s Governance Facilitator, Practice Education Facilitator and Senior Cancer Managers in professional development through the identification of learning needs across the organisation, working closely with cancer managers, supervisors of cancer nurses and educationalists.
2.3 Foster a culture of reflective practice enabling cancer nurses, healthcare professionals and junior doctors to develop confidence and clinical skill competency.
2.4 Collaborate and work in partnership with the Trust’s Governance Facilitator, Practice Education Facilitator and Senior Cancer Managers and develop the skills of urology nurses identifying where development is required and ensure that appropriate action plans are developed and implemented to remedy any shortcomings.
2.5 Collaborate with educationalists to identify educational packages that meet the needs of urology nurses that support the development of urology nurse led care.
2.6 In partnership with cancer management team and UU lead the development of high level multi-disciplinary educational programmes for clinical staff across primary and secondary care, promoting the sharing of expertise and influencing the development of practice.
2.7 Ensure that recommendations from NICE, BAD and BAPRA and Manual of Cancer Standards and the Royal Colleges are incorporated into local practice.
2.8 Work with key stakeholders, including Higher Education institutes and other education providers to develop and promote a range of learning opportunities.
2.9 Lead and support authentic stakeholder engagement, through co-production and co-design, to facilitate improvement in cancer services and user experience.
3.0 Service & Management
3.1 Work collaboratively with others to promote and create a culture of research awareness throughout cancer services teams. Undertake relevant research and audit topics to improve health outcomes and identify future services developments. Implement changes in practice where required
3.2 Provide expert advice to the CD for Cancer, Regional CD for Plastics and ADs for service development and act as a catalyst of change, which may lead to service re-design and the introduction of new models of care that are evidence-based.
3.3 Facilitate the dissemination of new evidence and research findings. and ensure systems are in place for their implementation.
3.4 Working in collaboration with the Trust’s Governance Facilitators to support multidisciplinary investigatory/audit work.
3.5 In collaboration with research colleagues in the Trust and Ulster University promote cancer based audit and research within Cancer Services.
3.6 Participate in national policy development and NICE guideline reviews including taking stakeholder status when appropriate.
3.7 In collaboration and partnership with the cancer management team support the development of tools/methods that enable the views of the service users to be heard.
3.8 Act as a key conduit for effective two way communication at a strategic level between managers and internal and external stakeholders.
4.0 Clinical Governance
4.1 Operate, at all times, with high standards of probity and personal conduct. Consider themselves an ambassador for cancer nursing acting as a role model for all staff and work within statutory frameworks governing nurses.
4.2 Contribute to the development and delivery of the Directorate Clinical Governance agenda.
4.3 Have a significant role in Quality improvement, providing expert input and influencing and challenging other professional, the wider organisation and across organisational boundaries to help deliver better services.
4.4 Have a strong belief in the need for self-development which positively influences academic activity, leadership skills, and drives service improvement methodology, leading/participating in multidisciplinary teams and peer supervision, publication and learning opportunities.
4.5 To collaborate with the AD and Clinical Manager in workforce planning within designated area of responsibility, maintaining methods of monitoring workload, clinical activity, staffing levels/skill mix ensuring action is taken to prevent compromised care.
4.6 To develop plans to improve recruitment and retention of the Multi-Disciplinary Team, minimising the use of bank utilisation.
4.7 To take the lead in complaint/disciplinary/incident and accident investigation, analysis and resolution, applying root cause analysis and, where applicable supporting the Governance team to undertake investigations and report writing and meeting with families.
4.8 To ensure statutory/mandatory duties and legal requirements are upheld within areas of responsibility.
4.9 To work with the public, service users and voluntary organisations ensuring meaningful engagement and involvement in the planning and evaluation of services.
4.10 To routinely measure and analyse standards through a range of audit activity, using a range of IT packages.
4.11 To identify research projects and coordinate team participation in Research & Development.
