Job Summary
The postholder will be a highly experienced, knowledgeable and educated member of the urology team, who is able to work autonomously within their expanded scope of clinical practice in the management of urology patients.
The ANP is accountable for the total episode of care for patients within the urology service and will report directly to the Consultant Nurse in Urology. This will include prescribing of relevant urological treatments. The Advanced Nurse Practitioner will demonstrate highly developed assessment, diagnostic, analytical and clinical judgement skills relevant to the components of this level of practice. The role will support the urology service and will incorporate red flag new and review clinics, red flag cystoscopies, TP biopsies and other clinics relevant to service need.
The Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) will use their expert knowledge and complex decision-making skills, guided by The NMC Code in all situations.
The ANP must demonstrate competence across the four key areas of the Advanced Nursing Practice Framework. In addition, the ANP must demonstrate the ability to safely work at an advanced level and be able to apply the competencies in the key areas of their scope of practice.
Main Duties / Responsibilities
The Advanced Nurse Practitioner in urology will deliver an advanced level of care to patients, undertaking comprehensive health assessments and will manage a range of conditions within the nurse led urology service. She / he will:
Practise autonomously within an expanded scope of practice.
Undertake advanced clinical assessment and examination skills
Have diagnostic skills and undertake complex decision making
Independent prescriber essential and have the ability to independently receive and making onward referrals in urology and other related conditions
Demonstrate highly developed assessment, diagnostic, analytical and clinical judgement skills.
Demonstrate a person-centred approach to care delivery.
Develop and sustain partnerships and networks to influence and improve healthcare outcomes and healthcare delivery.
Educate, supervise or mentor nursing colleagues and others in the healthcare team.
Contribute to and undertake activities, including research and audit, that monitor and improve the quality of healthcare and the effectiveness of practice.
KEY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
1.1 Evidence-based practice
To act as a role model to promote a culture of research and reflective practice within the department to enhance person-centred care and act as a resource in expert clinical evidence-based practice.
Lead in developing, implementing and monitoring policies, procedures and protocols.
Participate in strategic planning of future quality service development, by interpreting and synthesising information from a variety of sources in order to contribute to the development and implementation of evidence based practice locally and regionally were possible
Environment
To maintain a safe and clean environment for staff, patients / clients and visitors by ensuring compliance with legislation, policies and protocols including health and safety, healthcare associated infection, risk management and critical incident reporting.
Ensure staff awareness of environmental issues and take appropriate action as per HSC Trust policy.
Participate in the analysis, assessment and management of actual and potential risks to health and well-being.
Ensure safe and effective use of equipment as per HSC Trust policy.
Ensure near misses, incidents, accidents and faulty devices are recorded, reported, investigated and learning disseminated as per HSC Trust policy.

Establish systems and processes to ensure effective communication and continuity of patient / client care, liaising with multi-disciplinary / multi-agency teams and community services.
Engage stakeholders and use high-level negotiating and influencing skills to develop and improve practice, processes and systems
Work across professional, organisational and system boundaries and proactively develop and sustain new partnerships and networks to influence and improve health, outcomes and healthcare delivery systems.
Work with service lead to develop and participate in the delivery of specialist services and outreach training for anyone involved in the care of urology patients.
Develop good relationships with clinical staff so that service delivery issues can be addressed and implemented, to assist in the delivery of corporate and directorate objectives
Produce written and verbal reports/ minutes as required.
Ensure strict confidentiality of correspondence, reports, meetings and verbal communications as appropriate.
Liaise with all representatives of associated agencies and organisations.
1.4 Patient / client involvement
Identify opportunities for meaningful involvement of patients and carers in relation to the development / co-production of services.
Ensure effective systems are in place to gain patient / client and carers feedback on their experience of care.
Ensure compliments and complaints are managed in a timely and sensitive manner and in line with HSC Trust policy including the dissemination of shared learning.
2.0 Clinical/Professional/Specific Managerial Responsibilities
2.1 Direct Clinical Practice
Act as an expert practitioner within urology, demonstrating advanced comprehensive clinical skills and knowledge in health assessment, diagnosis, treatment, complex care planning and performing procedures as appropriate
Within expanded scope of practice will safely prescribe care and treatments according to clinical indication
Use expert specialist knowledge to underpin clinical judgement, interpret results of investigations, manage complex and unpredictable events, making inter speciality referrals and drawing upon senior medical support and an appropriate range of interagency and professional resources to problem solving.
Advance an integrated role that co-ordinates an improved continuity and quality of care for patients both in respect to treatment and the patient journey across the primary/ secondary care interfaces and other relevant agencies.
Practise autonomously planning and managing own work load, in a flexible manner providing clinical support for nurses and medical staff, manage patient caseload ensuring service provision meets patient need, demonstrating appropriate delegation
Develop and implement nurse led initiatives to advance the quality of cancer care and demonstrate the ability to manage and negotiate person - centred health and care needs for patients and their families.
Evaluate effectiveness of treatment and care provided and make changes as needed
Act as advocate to promote the health of patients and their families through education and support, identifying and referring to other services and projects that promote health and well- being
Utilise advanced communication skills, promoting and maintaining effective channels of communication in a sensitive and professional manner with patients, families and other relevant agencies across the primary/ secondary care interface.
Maintain excellent written and computerised patient records to document episodes of care
Monitor and report quality issues affecting the provision of advanced nursing care delivery, ensuring that all treatment protocols are systematically and continually evaluated and new protocols developed when required.
2.2 Role model
Act as a visible leader within the service, empowering and enabling staff to contribute to the delivery of high quality person-centred care.

2.3 Staff Management and Develop team performance
Provide expert professional and clinical advice to colleagues regarding therapeutic interventions, practice and service improvement within cancer services
Advance nursing practice and staff development within the department through supervision, mentorship, reflective practice and role modelling; participate and teach on relevant educational programs, working in partnership with Higher Education Institute staff as applicable.
Liaise with nursing managers and heads of nursing on all professional nursing issues
Participate in the recruitment and selection of staff
Participate in orientation and induction programmes for staff within the service.
Participate and undertake annual staff appraisal / development review, ensuring effective implementation of the Knowledge and Skills Framework (DH, 2004).
Contribute to learning needs analysis and facilitate annual personal development plans for the nursing team.
Ensure nurses working in the service are professionally qualified and registered with the NMC.
Manage poor performance and practice of staff in line with HSC Trust policies
Ensure processes are complied with to manage sickness / absenteeism and take appropriate action in line with HSC Trust policies as appropriate.
Promote the health and well-being of staff and observe for any signs of ill health or stress factors in staff assigned to the area and take appropriate action in line with HSC Trust policies and NMC guidelines.

Support the patient experience agenda to ensure robust mechanisms are in place for obtaining and acting on patient feedback to improve cancer services
Work with Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialists to maximise their impact on the cancer patient pathway
Develop collaborative working relationships with Urology ANPs in other Trusts to ensure integration of services and shared learning
Act as a core member of the Cancer MDT and NICAN CRG (in relation to the Urology Cancer CRG) and other relevant local and national ANPs in Urology forums
Support the Cancer MDT Peer Review process and lead on specific elements of MDT development
Contribute to and undertake activities, including research, that monitor and improve the quality of healthcare and the effectiveness of practice.
Critically appraise the outcomes of relevant research and evaluations and apply the information to improve practice.
Advocate and contribute to the development of a research culture that supports evidence-based practice.
