Job summary

The GP Practice Manager holds overall responsibility for the strategic and operational management of a medical practice. Working alongside GP partners, they ensure the surgery meets NHS contractual obligations, operates within budget, and continuously improves the delivery of safe, efficient, and patient-cantered primary care.

The practice manager directs the business, operational, and financial operations of the medical practice. They ensure the practice runs efficiently, handle human resources, manage budgets, and maintain strict compliance with healthcare regulations and patient safety standards so doctors can focus on clinical care.

About us

Springfield Medical Practice is a well-established GP practice in the North of Coventry. We care for 7,200 patients. We are an established training practice, with six GP Partners, two salaried GPs, 2 practice nurses, HCA and Phlebotomist, two clinical pharmacists and a social prescriber team and physiotherapist. We work from a purpose-built, high-quality premises with on-site parking.

We are proud of the professional, cohesive team we have built, including an excellent reception and administrative team. Our aim is to deliver the highest standard of care while treating every patient with dignity, respect and courtesy.

We are an EMIS practice, rated Good by the CQC, and a high QOF-achieving practice. We are members of the Coventry North Primary Care Network (PCN), working collaboratively with neighbouring practices to improve care for our local population.

Job responsibilities

The Role

As Practice Manager, you will ensure the vision and values of Springfield Medical Practice are realised through effective and efficient management of our team and resources. You will lead on the strategic direction of the practice as well as its day-to-day operational, financial and human resource management, working closely with the Partners to achieve their objectives.

We are looking for a self-starting individual who thrives with creative responsibility someone with strong strategic planning skills, proven experience of leading a team, and a track record in business development. This experience doesn't necessarily need to come from healthcare; strong transferable skills from other sectors are equally welcome.

This is a full-time role which will be within our core opening hours of 8am6.30pm, with flexibility required. We undertake extended access with within our PCN. We know flexibility works both ways, and this will be reciprocated.

Experience

Essential

  • Proven experience leading, motivating and managing a team, with strong interpersonal skills, the ability to build relationships, respect confidentiality, and handle sensitive situations professionally. This will include with staff and patients.
  • Solid human resources skills and understanding of employment law and related legislation, with the judgement to know when to seek further advice.
  • Understanding of quality assurance processes, with experience managing the information and evidence needed for successful outcomes (e.g. CQC inspections).
  • Strong project management skills, including organisational and operational planning, with the ability to prioritise and manage a busy, varied workload across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Ability to prepare agendas and papers for meetings, ensuring attendees have the right information in advance and that meetings deliver clear outcomes.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with strong attention to detail and the confidence to engage a range of audiences, including external stakeholders, on behalf of the practice.
  • A proactive approach, using initiative and applying knowledge flexibly to solve problems as they arise.
  • Ability to interpret financial and numerical information, construct complex budgets, and present detailed business plans. An understanding of AI technologies uses and limitations.
  • Proven experience identifying strategic and commercial opportunities within an organisation and successfully delivering on them.
  • Ability to interpret and advise on complex guidelines and take the lead on developing protocols and policies for the practice's operational activities.
  • Comfortable acknowledging the limits of your own knowledge, with the initiative to research further or draw on the expertise of others in the team.

Desirable

  • Experience working within the NHS or a similar context, with an understanding of practice management and the wider challenges currently facing GP practices.
  • An understanding of the future of General Practice and the 10-year plan and the integration with neighbourhood development framework.

Qualifications

Essential

  • A strong educational background, with at least a university degree or equivalent, and a demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development in management.
