Job overview

To lead, manage and develop the Trust’s portering operational service, ensuring the safe, timely and effective movement of patients, equipment, specimens, linen, stores, waste and deceased patients across the organisation. The post holder will provide professional and operational leadership for portering, post room , courtesy bus and moves team services, ensuring service delivery is patient centred, responsive, efficient, compliant with Trust policies and national NHS standards, and aligned to the responsibilities and level of accountability expected of an NHS Agenda for Change Band 7 role.

Main duties of the job

To ensure portering and associated operational services are delivered to a high standard, providing a safe, effective, responsive and professional service for patients, staff and visitors across all Trust sites.

To provide operational leadership for the portering service, including day-to-day service management, service planning, workforce deployment, escalation management and business continuity arrangements.

To develop and implement long-term service improvement plans, operational policies, standard operating procedures and performance measures for portering services in collaboration with Estates, Facilities, Nursing, Infection Prevention and Control, Health and Safety, Patient Flow and Clinical Teams.

To lead on the review and redesign of portering pathways to support patient flow, discharge processes, theatre activity, diagnostic services, emergency demand and internal logistics requirements.

To manage, postal manager, shift facilities manager, portering supervisors, team leaders and/or contracted service leads, ensuring staff and contractors deliver duties professionally, safely, courteously and within agreed quality and budget standards. To ensure adequate staffing capacity and skill mix through effective rota oversight, roster review, recruitment, induction, appraisal, supervision, mandatory training compliance and personal development planning.

Skills

Essential

  • Strong leadership, communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to analyse performance data and write clear reports;
  • Ability to prioritise under pressure, manage competing demands and influence staff across disciplines;
  • Competent IT skills including spreadsheets, email and service systems

Desirable

  • Advanced data analysis, audit or project management skills

Knowledge

Essential

  • Good understanding of NHS operational processes and the contribution of non-clinical services to patient care;
  • Knowledge of health and safety, infection prevention and control, moving and handling, incident investigation, risk management and service governance;
  • Understanding of workforce management and quality improvement

Desirable

  • Knowledge of digital task management systems, Lean/service redesign methods or national facilities guidance relevant to portering/logistics

Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience managing a large operational support service such as portering, logistics, facilities, patient flow or facilities services;
  • Experience of staff management, service planning, performance management and service improvement;
  • Experience of working within the NHS or a similarly complex regulated environment

Desirable

  • 10years + Experience of managing contracted services;
  • Experience of business continuity, major incident planning or multi-site operations;
  • NHS Experience

Qualifications

Essential

  • Qualification in facilities management, healthcare operations, leadership/management, logistics or equivalent experience
  • Evidence of management development relevant to operational service delivery

Desirable

  • Degree qualification or recognised professional qualification in facilities, operations, leadership or healthcare management
