Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, motivated and experienced nurse leader to join our Trauma and Orthopaedics team as Band 7 Manager for the Orthopaedic Centre at Alexandra Hospital. This is a key leadership role within the Surgical Care Group, supporting the delivery of safe, effective and compassionate care for patients accessing orthopaedic outpatient, fracture clinic and elective services.

The successful candidate will provide visible clinical and operational leadership, working closely with the Matron, Ward Managers, clinical teams, consultants, therapists, administrative colleagues and wider multidisciplinary teams to ensure high standards of patient care, experience, quality, governance and service performance.

The Orthopaedic Centre at Alexandra Hospital supports a busy and varied orthopaedic service, including fracture clinics, elective orthopaedic clinics, therapy input, pre-assessment activity and close working with imaging, theatre, ward and outpatient services. The service plays an important role in supporting patient pathways across Worcestershire, providing high-quality care for patients with trauma, elective and follow-up orthopaedic needs.

This role offers the opportunity to lead a skilled and committed team, contribute to service development, strengthen governance processes and support continuous improvement across the orthopaedic pathway.

Main duties of the job

Provide strong, visible and compassionate leadership to the Orthopaedic Centre team, promoting a positive culture focused on patient safety, quality, learning and staff wellbeing.

Support the day-to-day operational management of the department, ensuring effective use of resources, safe staffing, efficient clinic flow and timely escalation of risks or concerns.

Work collaboratively with the Matron, Directorate Management Team, consultants and multidisciplinary colleagues to deliver safe, effective and responsive orthopaedic services.

Lead and support quality improvement, audit, governance, incident review, patient feedback and action planning to improve patient experience and outcomes.

Promote high standards of professional practice, infection prevention, documentation, medicines management, safeguarding and compliance with Trust policies and clinical standards.

Support staff development through supervision, coaching, appraisal, competency development and effective management of performance, attendance and wellbeing.

Contribute to service transformation, pathway improvement and elective recovery priorities, ensuring the department remains responsive to changing operational demands.

Job responsibilities

Professional / Clinical Leadership:

To assess, develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care, co-ordinating the holistic needs of the patients. To be responsible for the organisation of nursing care of the patients who have been assigned to the team.

To take measures to ensure the safety of patients, which always includes delegation of patient care to nurses with the appropriate levels of skills. To report any untoward incidents/accidents to Matron/Directorate Manager.

Establish and maintain communication with individuals and groups about difficult or complex matters, overcoming any problems in communication.

Clinical Governance:

To facilitate research-based practice within their Ward and ensure appropriate implementation.

To ensure that nursing procedures are implemented and maintained in accordance with the Policies of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

To ensure good standards of practice in the Ward through effective quality assurance measures such as clinical audit programmes.

To ensure all staff is conversant and comply with Trust Policies and regulations, and attend compulsory lectures as instructed.

To monitor the safe and effective use of all equipment and the economic use of supplies, ordering replacement equipment together with maintenance of that equipment.

Management:

To ensure that a duty rota for the staff within the Ward will provide effective and well-balanced cover to meet with the requirements service and always ensures the presence of a suitably qualified and experienced nurse. Considering the budgetary constraints.

To liaise with other Ward/Department Managers within the Directorate and other Directorates as necessary to place workload and skill mix as effectively as possible. To inform and discuss with Matron/Directorate Manager any problems regarding nurse management.

Allocate, co-ordinate, monitor and assess the work of teams and individuals.

To manage the Ward/Unit allocated budget effectively to remain within financial constraints.

To ensure effective two-way communication with all disciplines so that patients receive optimum care.

Plan, obtain and deploy physical and/or financial resources.

To provide information for and participate in studies to determine workloads, patient dependency and quality assurance.

To maintain accurate records relating to all aspects of Ward management.

To participate in a rota of cover in the absence of Matron/Directorate Manager.

Contribute to the development of services.

Staff Development:

To ensure all staff reach their full potential by enabling them to develop professional, clinical, managerial and communication skills, which will be identified through the use of IPR.

To plan and participate in the teaching programmes of learners in accordance with their objectives, working closely with the University.

To develop the role of nursing within their specialty Ward and undertake training and assessment to extend clinical skills as appropriate to the Ward.

To identify areas for development of skills in accordance with the NMC guidelines.

Develop knowledge and practice in an area of work.

Professional:

To always maintain a professional attitude, developing the role of the nurse in the best interest of the patient and professional in accordance with the NMC Code.
