Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Medical Device Trainer to join the NMAHP Education Team at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. This role is pivotal in supporting the safe, effective, and compliant use of medical devices across the Trust by ensuring staff are appropriately trained, competent, and confident in device use.
The post holder will lead on the planning, delivery, and evaluation of medical device training, working closely with clinical teams, service managers, and external stakeholders to support highquality patient care and robust clinical governance.
This is a key enabling role that contributes directly to patient safety, quality improvement, and workforce capability.

Main duties of the job
What you will do:
Plan, deliver, and coordinate medical device training programmes for clinical staff across a range of services.
Provide expert advice and support on the safe and effective use of medical devices, in line with manufacturer guidance, Trust policy, and national standards.
Maintain oversight of training compliance, competency assessment, and training records.
Support the introduction of new medical devices, including rollout training and evaluation.
Contribute to learning from incidents, safety alerts, recalls, and audit findings relating to medical devices.
Work collaboratively with clinical teams, educators, procurement, and suppliers to ensure training needs are met.
Support preparation for inspections, audits, and regulatory assurance activities.
Skills and experience were looking for:
Professional registration as a nurse with relevant postregistration experience.
Strong working knowledge of medical devices and clinical risk management
Experience in education, training delivery, or clinical teaching.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage a wide range of staff.
Ability to work autonomously, prioritise workload, and manage competing demands.
Experience of audit, incident learning, or quality improvement is desirable.
A commitment to patient safety, continuous improvement, and workforce development.

Job responsibilities
To plan, deliver and evaluate training on the safe and effective use of medical devices for clinical staff, ensuring compliance with organisational, manufacturer and regulatory standards.
To support patient safety by improving staff competence, confidence and consistency in the use of medical equipment.
To develop and maintain training materials, competency frameworks and records related to medical device use.
To act as a subject matter expert for designated medical devices, providing advice, troubleshooting support and best-practice guidance. To work collaboratively with clinical teams, medical engineering, procurement and device suppliers to support device implementation, updates and recalls.
To contribute to risk management and governance, including incident investigations, audits and learning related to medical device use.
To support workforce development by identifying training needs and contributing to education programmes for new and existing staff.
To support adherence to local and national targets in relation to training compliance for medical devices, providing regular updates to organisational groups

Experience
Essential
- Substantial experience working in a healthcare or clinical environment, with regular use of medical devices or clinical equipment
- Demonstrable experience of delivering education, training or teaching to healthcare staff, either formally (planned sessions) or informally (on-the-job training)
- Experience of supporting safe clinical practice, with an understanding of patient safety principles and risk associated with medical device use
- Experience of assessing competence or supporting skill development in others, including providing constructive feedback
- Experience of working with multidisciplinary teams across different staff groups and clinical settings
- Experience of interpreting and working within policies, procedures and guidelines, particularly those related to equipment use, safety or training
- Experience of prioritising and managing workload, including balancing planned activity with ad-hoc or urgent requests
- Experience of using IT systems to record training activity, maintain records or support education delivery
- Evidence of working autonomously within defined scope, while recognising when to escalate concerns or seek advice
Qualifications
Essential
- Registered nurse with current 1st level NMC registration
- Degree in nursing studies or relevant clinical degree or evidence that
- currently working towards this (UK equivalent)
- Mentorship certificate / Practice Assessor training or demonstrable
- equivalent experience
- Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD) relevant to medical
- devices, education, patient safety or clinical practice
- Completion of relevant medical device training, including manufacturerled
- training where appropriate

- Specialist education or training qualification (e.g. PGCert in Education, Clinical Education award)

- Ability to safely handle, set up, operate and dismantle medical devices and
- clinical equipment in line with manufacturer instructions and local policies.
