Job overview

The post holder is responsible for managing a highly specialised caseload of deaf children, by supporting during assessment and also following cochlear implantation. They will also have regular adult clinics, for both assessment and post operative rehabilitation. We are looking for an experienced clinician to join our team, on a full time basis, although we would consider part time hours. The post holder will work for a multi-disciplinary team based in an outpatient site of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, joining a team of highly specialist Speech and Language Therapists at the Nottingham Auditory Implant Programme. The post holder will work collaboratively with other agencies and professionals from Health, Education and Social Services, with advisory visits to home, nurseries and schools as required. They will contribute to research and audit projects and to the team’s teaching and training commitments. The post holder typically carries out clinical work for 80% of the time, both face-to-face and via video consultations, and is expected to update their own professional knowledge.

There will be opportunities to collaborate with Nottingham Audiology Services and Nottingham Biomedical Research Unit in Hearing which are based on the same site.

Main duties of the job

§ To provide a flexible and highly specialist service for deaf/deafened children before and after cochlear implantation within the Nottingham Auditory Implant Programme, a large multi-disciplinary team within the Surgical division at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust

§ This role requires a high level of clinical and professional expertise in order that those with listening, language and communication needs and their families benefit from well-coordinated pro-active, specialist, efficient and time-effective assessment, training and rehabilitation support within a multi-disciplinary team, which includes audiologists, surgeons, clinical psychologists, clinical assistants and ward staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

• Provide highly specialist assessment, differential diagnosis and management for children and adults with deafness and additional communication needs.
• Interpret complex clinical and audiological information to inform treatment planning.
• Contribute to cochlear implant candidacy decisions and ongoing pathway management.
• Communicate complex and sensitive information to patients and families, adapting communication methods as required.
• Deliver specialist individual and group interventions and support effective use of cochlear implant technology.
• Monitor outcomes, identify concerns and signpost appropriately.
• Supervise and develop junior staff and clinical assistants.

Communication & Partnership Working

• Work collaboratively with health, education, social care and voluntary sector partners to ensure coordinated care.
• Provide accessible written and visual information to support patient and family understanding.
• Represent the needs of deaf/deafened children with implants at relevant forums.

Service Delivery & Professional Practice

• Contribute to a high‑quality, multidisciplinary cochlear implant service.
• Maintain up‑to‑date CPD and manage clinical risk within own practice.
• Participate in clinical governance, service improvement and implementation of relevant national/local policy.

Training & Education

• Provide training for patients, families and professionals.
• Support student placements and offer supervision to colleagues.
• Contribute to teaching and professional events as required.

Research, Audit & Development

• Undertake research, audit and service evaluation to inform practice.
• Contribute to innovation, quality improvement and evidence‑based service development.

Resources & Equipment

• Ensure safe use and maintenance of specialist equipment and therapy materials.

Monitor stock levels and request replacements when needed
