Job overview
The Band 7 Infection Prevention and Control Practitioner provides specialist advice, support and leadership across clinical areas to promote and maintain high standards of infection prevention and control trustwide. The role works closely with Ward Managers, clinical teams, microbiology, bed management and other services to identify and manage infection risks, support safe patient placement and ensure compliance with Trust and national IPC standards.
The post contributes to infection surveillance, clinical and environmental audits, outbreak investigation and management, surgical site infection surveillance, policy implementation and the development of performance indicators. The role also provides education, guidance and expert advice to clinical staff, acting as a visible role model and supporting continuous improvement in infection prevention and patient safety.
Main duties of the job
- Provide specialist Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) advice, support and leadership across the Trust.
- Undertake infection surveillance, risk assessment, investigation and outbreak management.
- Conduct clinical and environmental IPC audits, identify areas for improvement and monitor action plans.
- Provide expert advice on IPC standards, policies, clinical practice and patient placement.
- Deliver IPC education, training and support to clinical and non-clinical staff.
- Support the implementation of national guidance, Trust IPC policies and the annual IPC programme.
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and external agencies to promote safe practice.
- Contribute to IPC reporting, surveillance, research, quality improvement and service development.
- Provide operational leadership and supervision to junior members of the IPC team.
- Work flexibly across both sites according to service requirements.
