Salary Range: Band 6

Must have at least 2 years' experience within the NHS or Private sector located within the UK only (Evidence will be requested at interview)

Main duties of the job

• To provide nursing leadership and care for adults with serious mental illness in the context of the care programme approach.
• To act as a deputy to the ward manager in their absence.
• As a qualified nurse, the post-holder will contribute to and oversee the coordinating of the care planning process in the in-patient setting.
• They will be responsible for providing clinical leadership.
• They will deputise in the absence of the ward manager as required.
• They will provide clinical and managerial support to staff through accepting the role of senior nurse on-site as required.
• To work in partnership with Multi-disciplinary team and contribute to the development of the service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• To practice within the NMC code of conduct.
• To work with, promote and contribute to the development of appropriate models of inpatient care.
• To contribute to the assessment of care needs, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care within the context of the care programme approach.
• To provide supervision and clinical leadership to junior nursing staff, to ensure effective delivery of programmes of care for the patients on the caseload.
• To report and identify service deficit limitations/development opportunity to senior colleagues.
• To monitor the well being of patients and contribute to the development of practice in relation to protecting individuals whose health and well being is at risk.
• To ensure effective communication with the multi disciplinary team, service users and carers about programmes of care and routine or complex matters.
• To develop and maintain confidentiality in accordance with the data protection act and professionals code of conduct.
• To promote positive health by offering information and education to patients/carers on mental health issues and treatments.
• To administer, store and order medications in line with trust policy and monitor and report to medical staff effects of medication.
• To promote service user carer and relatives’ involvement whenever feasible throughout episodes of care and developing a clinical practice.
• To be conversant with, and practice within, the mental health act 1983 and code of practice including the receipt of section papers.
• To maintain and monitor clinical records in accordance with local policies.
• To promote, maintain and monitor best practice in health, safety and security of self and others in own work area as identified in local policies.
• To set clinical standards within the team based on current research and developments in clinical practice.
• To contribute and promote quality initiatives and audits, e.g. clinical audit, essence of care.
• Take an active part in developing knowledge ideas to support and promote evidence based practice.
• To take charge of the ward taking responsibility for the clinical area in the absence of the ward manager.
