To maintain and develop a Chaplaincy Service within a multi-denominational and multi-faith team, ensuring the provision of a professional ministry and high quality of contemporary spiritual healthcare and pastoral support, through the management of chaplains and oversight of the chaplaincy team and its activities.
This will include providing for specific religious needs, exercising a key educational role, engaging collaboratively with professionals from other healthcare disciplines and participating in the service delivery.
Main duties of the job
The role will be required to support across all of the core UHDB sites and may be required to support a weekend and on-call service.
Lead the Chaplaincy team and manage the operational delivery and strategic development of Chaplaincy services across the Trust, ensuring the implementation of all corporate and departmental policies and procedures and monitor and regularly review Chaplaincy Services standards and code of conduct, against the NHS England Chaplaincy Guidelines for Managers. Identify and initiate collaborative work with medical, nursing, AHP and Management staff to plan, develop and deliver enhanced patient care.
Line manage Team Chaplains, bank Chaplains, Chaplaincy Volunteers, Eucharistic Ministers and those on student / work experience placements. Actively participate as a member of multi-disciplinary groups/committees within the Trust e.g. Clinical Ethics Committee, Allied Health Professions Advisory Committee.
Respond to opportunities for strengthening relationships with local churches, faith groups, other organisations and members of the community to enable the continuing development of such links.
Monitor and evaluate the needs of the multi-faith / multi-cultural community. Initiate, co-ordinate and contribute to the training and development needs of staff especially in spiritual, religious, pastoral and ethical issues.

Essential
- Experience in healthcare Chaplaincy.
- Understanding of Equality and Diversity legislation.
- Significant pastoral experience/church parish ministry
- Self-motivated and able to prioritise and able to work both independently or collaboratively within a multi-belief team. Procedural knowledge of healthcare chaplaincy
- Knowledge of and sympathy with multi-faith issues.
- Ability to work in a stressful and emotional environment with patients, relatives and staff
Communication
Essential
- Ability to communicate verbally and non-verbally with sensitivity, respect and regard for the patient’s condition and spiritual needs.
- Ability to communicate with people from a wide range of social, belief or non-belief, and ethnic backgrounds, impartially and without judgement
Qualifications
Essential
- Appropriate accredited ministerial and theological education (professional qualification) preferably degree standard
- Appropriate accreditation by the faith group.

- A registrant member of the UKBHC, or willing to work towards registration
