JOB DESCRIPTION

POST: Diabetic Eye Screener/ Grader

LOCATION: Diabetic Eye Screening Programme

BAND: 4/5 (Band 4 until successful completion of Health Screener Diploma)

REPORTS TO: DESP Senior Ophthalmic Practitioner

RESPONSIBLE TO: DESP Programme & Failsafe Manager

Job Summary/Main Purpose

The post holder will be responsible for undertaking retinal photography to detect eye disease in patients with diabetes and subsequent grading of these images in accordance with national screening standards.

The post holder will work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team and contribute to the smooth and efficient running of the service.

Diabetic eye screening is provided on a daily basis at various locations throughout the Trust, at Ophthalmology outreach centres and at GP practices and other locations across Northern Ireland.

Please note: Whilst you will be employed by the Belfast Trust, you will be required to work at various locations across Northern Ireland as listed in the information sheet.

Main Duties / Responsibilities

For each of the following the post holder will

Participate in the provision of a high quality Diabetic Eye Screening Programme across Northern Ireland on a daily basis.

Undertake all aspects of retinal photography including visual acuity testing, administration of eye drops, taking of retinal photographs, ensuring that all photographs meet the required standard for grading.

Manage and operate the specialist imaging equipment according to set procedures including initial trouble shooting if required.

Consistently produce high quality images and undertake retraining as and when necessary.

Review and grade the images in accordance with national standards and defined protocols, acting upon the grading result as appropriate.

Complete monthly training sets to ensure the grading of images is to the required standard.

Use the IT system to manage the screening clinics, including checking and updating of patient information, taking, review and triage of images and primary grading.

Organise the smooth running of clinics including management of drop in patients and follow up of those who DNA.

Use Trust vehicles to transport mobile cameras to/from screening locations and other facilities such as secure units, renal dialysis departments etc

Ensure there are adequate consumables available for screening clinics.

Participate in quality assurance activities to support service improvement e.g. audit.

Communicate effectively with patients and relatives to assist in their understanding of retinal photography.

Liaise effectively with all members of the multi disciplinary team and GP practice staff.

Promote good management of diabetes to service users.

Adhere to all relevant departmental procedures and Trust policies.

Complete Level 3 Health Screener Diploma in Diabetic Eye Screening & Grading within 2 years of registration.

Undertake ongoing training to keep up to date with technology and knowledge of diabetic eye disease.

Assist with the production of presentation/teaching materials for the screening service.

Participate in annual staff appraisal and regular review to identify any further training and development needs.

Carry out any other duties as may be reasonably required by the Senior OSP.

The Trusts Environmental Cleaning Strategy recognises the key principle that "Cleanliness matters is everyone's responsibility, not just the cleaners" Whilst there are staff employed who are responsible for cleaning services, all Trust staff have a responsibility to ensure a clean, comfortable, safe environment for patients, clients, residents, visitors, staff and members of the general public.

Infection Prevention and Control

The Belfast Trust is committed to reducing Healthcare associated infections (HCAIs) and all staff have a part to play in making this happen. Staff must comply with all policies in relation to Infection Prevention and Control and with ongoing reduction strategies. Standard Infection Prevention and Control Precautions must be used at all times to ensure the safety of patients and staff.

This includes:-

Cleaning hands either with soap and water or a hand sanitiser at the appropriate times (WHO '5 moments');

Using the correct '7 step' hand hygiene technique;

Being 'bare below the elbows' when in a clinical environment;

Following Trust policies and the Regional Infection Control Manual (found on intranet);

Wearing the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE);

Ensuring correct handling and disposal of waste (including sharps) and laundry;

Ensuring all medical devices (equipment) are decontaminated appropriately i.e. cleaned, disinfected and/or sterilised;

Ensuring compliance with High Impact Interventions.

PERSONNEL SPECIFICATION

Must have 2 A Levels in Maths,Healthcare, Science or ICT or NVQ Level 4 equivalent in a relevant subject, e.g. Healthcare, Biology, Photography and a minimum of 2 years' experience in a healthcare setting working directly with patients/ clients within hospital or community setting.

OR

HNC/D, BTEC Level 4 or equivalent in

health and social care and minimum of 2

years' experience in a healthcare setting

working directly with patients/ clients within

hospital or community setting.

Hold either City and Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Diabetic Retinopathy Screening, Imaging and Grading or the Level 3 Health Screener Diploma in Diabetic Eye Screening & Grading and 2 years' experience in diabetic eye screening.

The appointed applicant will be expected to undertake and successfully complete the Level 3 Health Screener Diploma in Diabetic Eye Screening & Grading within 2 years of registration.

Must hold a full driving license valid in the UK and have access to a car.
