The Heart Directorate at Royal Brompton Hospital is seeking an experienced, enthusiastic, and dynamic Theatre and Catheter Lab Manager (Band 8c). This is an exciting time to join the Service as we transform our pathways within the Heart, Lung and Critical Care Clinical Group at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. Our division is committed to clinical transformation and innovation, providing multiple opportunities to drive change.
Based at the Royal Brompton site, you will oversee five dedicated cardiothoracic operating theatres, one hybrid theatre, and five cutting-edge cardiac catheter laboratories covering thoracic, cardiac, and congenital specialties. Working closely with the General Manager, Clinical Directors, and nursing leadership, you will ensure our services reflect our values: Caring, Ambitious, and Inclusive. We are looking for a collaborative leader to optimize clinical activity and ensure the highest standards of patient safety.
Main duties of the job
- Operational Leadership: Ensure the smooth day-to-day running, efficient management, and patient flow across all Theatres, Perfusion, and Cath Labs.
- Strategic Development: Partner with Theatre and Cath Lab Directors to align clinical activity, optimize resource utilization, and execute long-term strategic plans.
- Financial Accountability: Hold responsibility for setting and managing pay and non-pay budgets, identifying savings, and ensuring financial efficiency.
- People Management: Line manage designated direct reports, support workforce development, and foster multi-disciplinary collaboration alongside nursing leadership.
- Governance & Risk: Oversee robust clinical governance frameworks, investigate complaints or incidents, and manage departmental risk mitigation.
- Procurement: Lead materials management and procurement strategies for high-value equipment and consumables.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Service Delivery: Accountable for daily operational lists and robust escalation processes to minimize patient cancellations.
- Policy & Risk: Develop cross-site operational protocols, conduct departmental risk assessments, and enforce health, safety, and infection control guidelines.
- Business & Capital Planning: Lead business planning and capital expenditure bids to replace high-value assets like X-Ray, EP, and hemodynamic equipment.
- Workforce & Appraisals: Drive recruitment, performance management, and meaningful appraisals/PDPs for direct reports while supporting mandatory training compliance.
- Complex Communication: Arbitrate and negotiate complex clinical and operational issues across diverse stakeholder groups, presenting data to influence change.
- On-Call Duties: Participate in the Senior Manager On-Call rota covering the Royal Brompton and Harefield hospital sites.

- Ability to manage highly complex and difficult situations where there is often direct conflict
- Ability to lead, facilitate and deliver significant changes in service provision across a wide range of disciplines
- A proven track record of delivering operationally, financially and strategically within a pressured, complex and professional organisation

- Experience of benchmarking services with comparable providers
Previous experience
Essential
- Extensive management experience at senior level (Band 8) in theatres and/or cath labs. This must include experience of directly managing staff and resources above £10m.
- Proven experience of managing multidisciplinary teams and collaborative MDT working
- Experience writing and presenting complex business cases
Desirable
- Knowledge of specialist cardiology and cardiothoracic procedures
- Knowledge of ergonomics / human factors
- Experience of large scale capital equipment procurement and installation

Knowledge/Qualifications

- Relevant professional qualification (i.e. Registered General Nurse / Registered ODP / Registered Radiographer)
- Postgraduate clinical qualification in specialist field
- Managerial training and qualification e.g. MBA or MSc/DMS or equivalent experience
Desirable
- Evidence of further education relating to Theatres / Cath labs
- Leadership training
