About us

The Science Evidence and Analytics (SEA) Directorate is responsible for ensuring that NICE uses the best available evidence in its guidance to support decision makers across health and care. Although the Science Policy team sits within SEA, our remit is to support the whole organisation. The team undertakes research and works with and influences external policy partners on issues related to the work of NICE. The team works to develop NICE's methods for health technology assessment and guideline development, and encourages partners to commission research relevant to our research priority areas. We build on and enhance NICE's reputation as a methodological innovator and aim to improve our methods to take account of novel technologies and changes in the wider health and social care system.

We have built up a broad portfolio of science policy and methods projects that addresses some of the most challenging issues facing NICE. Examples of recent and ongoing projects include our work with NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care to develop innovative models that inform payments for new antimicrobials, our review of the implementation of the NICE severity modifier, and our appraisal of policy options regarding the perspective to be taken in economic analyses underpinning NICE guidance. We are also responsible for NICE Listens, NICE's programme for deliberative public engagement.
