What Experience Do You Need for an Assistant Psychologist Job?

What experience you need for an assistant psychologist job: clinical work, research, voluntary routes and realistic timelines to a first NHS post.

The baseline: an accredited degree and GBC

Every NHS assistant psychologist advert starts from the same requirement: a psychology degree accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) that gives you the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership, known as GBC. GBC confirms your degree covered the core areas of psychology, normally with at least a lower second class (2:2) result and a pass in the research project. Graduates in other subjects can gain GBC through an accredited conversion course.

GBC is a baseline, not an advantage. Nearly every other applicant has it too. Shortlisting is decided by what you have done since, or alongside, your degree.

What clinical experience do panels actually credit?

Panels credit direct, supervised contact with the kinds of people the service supports. The strongest evidence is paid work in real services, because it shows you can manage shifts, distress, risk conversations and record keeping. Roles that consistently count include:

  • Healthcare assistant or support worker posts in mental health, usually at Band 2 or Band 3
  • Support work in learning disability and autism services
  • Older adult and dementia care, in the NHS or in care homes
  • Recovery, rehabilitation and supported housing roles
  • Work in drug and alcohol, homelessness or forensic settings

Make the psychology in your experience visible

Guidance from the Clearing House for Postgraduate Courses in Clinical Psychology, the body that handles Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy) applications, notes that support work counts for more when the application of psychological knowledge was central to the role. The same logic runs through AP shortlisting.

Whatever your job title, describe the psychological thinking in what you did: following a positive behaviour support plan, using de-escalation approaches, completing observation charts that informed formulation, or contributing to reviews led by a psychologist. Experience supervised by, or with regular contact with, a qualified psychologist is especially valuable.

Research experience counts too

Assistant psychologist job descriptions almost always include audit, outcome measurement or research support, so research experience is scored, not just admired. Beyond your dissertation, useful evidence includes work as a research assistant in a university or NHS team: recruiting participants, taking informed consent, entering and cleaning data, running literature searches, and helping with service audits or evaluations.

Research posts also carry clinical weight when they involve direct contact with patients or clinically relevant questions. If your research experience is thin, a small completed audit in a current care role can be enough to evidence the criterion.

Transferable experience that still helps

Not everything has to happen in a clinical service. Panels also credit volunteering on listening and crisis helplines, befriending and peer support schemes, teaching or learning support with children with additional needs, caring responsibilities you choose to mention, and any role involving safeguarding, confidentiality or difficult conversations.

Transferable experience works best as a supplement rather than the whole case. It proves communication and values. Paid clinical work proves you can manage the job's daily reality.

How much experience is realistically enough?

There is no official threshold, but the pattern is consistent. Most people who reach interview for a first Band 4 post have around one to two years of relevant experience after graduating, usually combining paid support work with some research or volunteering. Band 5 adverts typically expect previous AP or equivalent experience on top of that.

Depth beats breadth. Twelve months in one service, with supervision, named duties and real reflection, reads better than five short placements described in one line each. If you are shortlisted but not appointed, the gap is usually interview practice. If you are not being shortlisted at all, the gap is usually evidence against specific criteria, not total years.

The honorary route and the fairness debate

Honorary assistant psychologist posts are unpaid roles offering supervised psychology experience, and they exist because demand for AP experience far exceeds the number of paid posts. In 2024 the BPS published expected standards for the recruitment and employment of assistant psychologists. It recommends the title voluntary assistant psychologist, says voluntary roles should involve no more than about one day a week with the same supervision standards as paid posts, and states that it does not recommend unpaid AP roles, because they advantage people who can afford to work without pay.

If you take a voluntary post, keep it alongside paid work, agree a written plan and regular supervision from the start, and treat it as a bridge rather than a destination. Panels value it, but they value paid clinical work at least as highly.

A realistic timeline from graduation to a first AP post

Plan for one to two years. A common sequence: apply for healthcare assistant or support worker posts in mental health straight after graduating, since these recruit continuously at Band 2 and Band 3, which pay £25,272 and £25,760 to £27,476 respectively in England from 1 April 2026. After six to twelve months, add a research thread or a small voluntary commitment. Start applying for AP posts once you can evidence every essential criterion in typical adverts, and keep applying while you work.

Because AP adverts often close early when application caps are reached, checking daily and applying within days matters. Job boards such as Job Clerk gather NHS adverts in one place to make that checking faster; applications themselves always go through NHS Jobs or Trac, the official systems. Expect rejections along the way. Most eventual APs applied many times, and each tailored application gets quicker to produce.

Alternatives that build the same evidence

An AP post is one route into the psychological professions, not the only one. Funded roles that build similar or stronger evidence include:

  • Trainee psychological wellbeing practitioner (PWP): a paid training year, usually at Band 4, in NHS Talking Therapies services, moving to Band 5 once qualified, focused on brief interventions for anxiety and depression
  • Trainee children's wellbeing practitioner (CWP): a funded one-year postgraduate diploma role in children and young people's mental health services
  • Research assistant posts in universities and NHS trusts
  • Healthcare assistant and support worker roles in mental health, which remain the most available starting point

One caution about funded training routes

Since April 2022, NHS funding rules generally prevent someone who completes NHS-funded psychological professions training from accessing further NHS-funded training for a different psychological professions role within two years, where it would change their job. If your firm goal is the DClinPsy, factor that gap into your plan before taking a funded practitioner training place.

Whichever route you take, the destination numbers are the same for everyone: for 2025 entry, 5,910 people applied for 1,179 funded DClinPsy places. Strong supervised experience, clearly reflected on, is what separates applications at every stage.

Frequently asked questions

How much experience do you need to become an assistant psychologist?

There is no official minimum, but most people appointed to a first Band 4 post have around one to two years of relevant experience after graduating. That usually combines paid support work in mental health or a related service with some research, audit or volunteering. Band 5 posts normally expect previous assistant psychologist or closely equivalent supervised experience on top of that baseline.

Does volunteering count as experience for assistant psychologist jobs?

Yes, if it involves real contact with people in distress or with relevant client groups. Helpline listening roles, befriending schemes, peer support and voluntary assistant psychologist posts all provide usable evidence, and adverts often state that experience can be paid or voluntary. Panels still weigh paid clinical work heavily, so volunteering works best alongside a paid care or research role rather than instead of one.

Can I get an assistant psychologist job straight after graduating?

It happens, but rarely, and usually only when the graduate built strong experience during their degree, such as paid care work, a placement year or substantial research involvement. Most graduates need a year or two in healthcare assistant, support worker or research assistant roles first, because adverts list experience with a relevant client group as an essential criterion that must be evidenced.

Does healthcare assistant experience count for assistant psychologist jobs?

Yes, and it is one of the most common foundations. Healthcare assistant and support worker posts in mental health, learning disability or older adult services provide the direct client contact, risk awareness and record keeping that person specifications ask for. Make the psychological content explicit in applications: behaviour support plans, de-escalation, observations and any contact with the team's psychologist.

Is an unpaid honorary assistant psychologist post worth it?

It can add supervised psychology experience and a psychologist referee, but the British Psychological Society does not recommend unpaid assistant psychologist roles and prefers the title voluntary assistant psychologist, with a limit of about one day a week and proper supervision. If you take one, keep it alongside paid work and agree a written plan covering duties, supervision and development from the start.
