Join our Day Case and Surgical Admissions Lounge team as a Band 6 Nurse, delivering high-quality care throughout the surgical pathway. You will provide expert clinical care, ensuring the safe admission, assessment and discharge of surgical patients. Using your clinical judgement, you will identify and manage risks, support patients with complex needs and work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, effective and patient-centred care.
As a senior member of the team, you will provide clinical leadership, coordinate patient flow, support efficient theatre utilisation and respond to changing service demands. You will supervise and support Band 5 nurses, Clinical Support Workers and students, while contributing to service improvements and ensuring a seamless patient experience from admission to discharge.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care
- Assess patients on admission and identify risks
- Deliver safe, evidence-based care and escalate concerns
Patient Flow & Coordination
- Coordinate admissions, transfers and discharges
- Prioritise workload in line with theatre activity
- Minimise delays and cancellations
Leadership
- Act as nurse-in-charge when required
- Support and develop Band 5 nurses, CSWs and students
Teamwork & Communication
- Liaise with theatre, anaesthetic and surgical teams
- Maintain accurate documentation
Service Improvement & Governance
- Support efficient patient pathways
- Participate in audit, quality improvement and incident reporting
Main duties of the job
As a Band 6 Nurse, you will play a key role in delivering safe, effective and patient-centred care within a busy surgical environment. Working autonomously within agreed protocols, you will undertake clinical assessments, identify and manage risks, and provide expert care for patients with complex needs. Using sound clinical judgement, you will work closely with surgical and anaesthetic teams to escalate concerns and ensure patients receive timely, appropriate care.
You will support effective patient flow across the Day Case and Surgical Admissions Lounge, helping to minimise delays, reduce cancellations and maximise theatre utilisation. This varied role requires excellent organisational skills and the ability to respond to changing priorities in a fast-paced setting.
As a senior member of the team, you will provide clinical leadership, coordinate patient activity and support the safe management of workload. You will act as a role model, supporting and developing Band 5 nurses, Clinical Support Workers and students to maintain high standards of care.
Working collaboratively with theatre teams, bed management and surgical specialties, you will help deliver efficient patient pathways from admission to discharge. You will also contribute to service development, quality improvement and the delivery of innovative practices that enhance patient experience and outcomes.
