The ward clerk is responsible for providing a reception service to the ward and delivering a high standard of customer care to a wide range of groups.

The ward clerk must play a proactive role in collecting, investigating, verifying and recording a high standard of patient demographic and treatment data. Such information must be accurately inputted in the patient information system.

The post-holder must undertake effective forward planning to ensure that the administrative needs of the service are met and must carry out a range of effective administrative processes to support the delivery of high quality patient care.

Main duties of the job

  • To ensure that all patient admissions, discharges, transfers, and deaths are recorded accurately on the WPAS system. To assist with patient This is a non-clinical role however the post holder is expected to work as part of the wider multi-disciplinary team to ensure that patients are provided with the best possible care. To provide a professional, helpful and courteous reception service for patients or relatives arriving on the ward, welcoming all visitors and directing as appropriate. Be able to use judgement and initiative to deal with difficult situations and

anxious family members / carers using empathy, tact and diplomacy

  • To answer the telephone and take messages in a professional helpful courteous manner, answering or referring queries as appropriate. To provide a confidential and high standard general administrative support to the ward, particularly supporting the Ward Manager with tasks such as typing reports, data entry, taking minutes of multi professional meetings as well as ward meetings and data entry as required.
