Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic band 7 upper gastrointestinal (UGI) clinical nurse specialist (CNS) to join our team working at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHT). The post holder will work closely alongside one other existing UGI nurse specialist and be part of a larger multidisciplinary team consisting of gastroenterology and general surgery consultants, radiologists, endoscopists, dieticians and other professions such as pharmacy.

The UGI CNS performs a crucial role in making a difference to patients by providing much needed support and advice to patients, carers and relatives.

They will also be responsible for the continued development of the service and associated pathways in order to meet the 28-day faster diagnostic standard.

This is a full-time, fixed-term position until 31st January 2027. Applicants should be enthusiastic, motivated and passionate about improving care for patients and should come with a minimum of 3 years post-registration experience. Good knowledge and practice of nursing for gastroenterology and/or endoscopy inpatients or outpatients is essential.

The post holder will be fully supported through access to medical staff daily, weekly MDT meetings, regular departmental meetings and study leave appropriate to the job role.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide specialist nursing advice to support and facilitate high quality, individualised care to patients/clients and relatives/carers without supervision in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team in line with local and national targets.
  • To be responsible for developing and delivering the patient pathways within the Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI) service, including outpatient clinics, triaging of referrals and specialist nursing advice for colleagues and patients.
  • To provide specialist nursing care and support and deputise for their line manager in the management of their clinical speciality. This will involve dealing with complex situations and having to take appropriate action in a variety of settings.
  • To be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and to provide cover for any area specified acting as professional role model providing direct and indirect clinical care, teaching and research.
  • To use specialist nursing knowledge to review and interpret a range of clinical investigatory results, in conjunction with the medical team, to determine the next stage of the pathway (e.g. discharge and referral back to GP, or referral to MDT or specialist services as required).
