A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen to join a small specialist TB team based in Essex. The post-holder will work as part of the TB nursing team, running nurse led clinics for patients with TB and NTM, primarily at Princess Alexandra Hospital (Harlow) and potentially cross-covering at our three other hospital sites. The role will also include home visits, managing a varied caseload, contact screening, education and training, and raising awareness of TB. You will help to provide a flexible and responsive high quality TB service, facilitating effective patient management and protection to the public.
We are looking for a dynamic registered nurse ideally with post-registration experience in TB and/or experience in Tuberculin testing and BCG vaccination. You will be expected to work flexibly and autonomously but also function well within a team.
The post is part-time excluding Bank Holidays and weekends.

Main duties of the job
- To autonomously run nurse led TB contact clinics and TB/NMTB patient clinics.
- Facilitate accurate healthcare information, health advice and appropriate support and referral.
- To participate in developing the strategic direction of the TB service in line with national and local targets working closely with the Band 7 TB Nurses.
- Provide screening/immunisation clinics for TB contacts and new entrants, children and adults.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Work under patient specific/group directions to perform and assess Mantoux testing, interpreting results appropriately, administering BCG as required or sending for further investigation in accordance with NICE TB guidance (2016).
- To co-ordinate and lead the TB service in the absence of the Band 7 Tuberculosis Specialist Nurse including supervision of other staff members.
- To be able to work independently under the guidance of Band 7 TB nurse specialist as well as within a team
- Input data related to Tuberculosis notifications according to relevant protocols.
- Competent in the use of the IT systems including: SystmOne, Word, Excel, Pathology, Hospital appointment systems, and Radiology.
- Liaise with the multidisciplinary team within the Tuberculosis Service, covering South East Essex, South West Essex, Mid Essex and West Essex, with the acute hospitals within those PCT’s and Public Health England (PHE).
- Provide statistical returns as required by the service
- Attend and participate in all clinic meetings and patient meetings as agreed with Manager.
- Share clinical knowledge with colleagues and be involved in the delivery of ongoing training, education and support of TB awareness sessions and study days.
- Participate in clinical audit and research as required, relating to the TB speciality.
