Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is pleased to invite applications for a substantive Consultant ENT Surgeon with a sub-specialty interest in General ENT and Sleep Surgery. This is a permanent, full-time post comprising 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week, developed in response to current service needs within our well-regarded ENT department at Homerton University Hospital.
This post offers an exciting opportunity to join a progressive, collaborative and forward-thinking ENT department within a Trust rated 'Outstanding' for care by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The post has been developed to support service expansion and to ensure continuity in the delivery of high-quality elective ENT care, with scope to develop services for adult and paediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). There are opportunities to offer palatal surgery, barbed pharyngoplasty, TORS and to introduce OSA implants (e.g. hypoglossal nerve stimulation), supported by appropriate theatre access and team collaboration.
Main duties of the job
The ENT department provides a comprehensive secondary-care service covering adult and paediatric general ENT, head & neck, otology, rhinology, paediatric airway and sleep surgery. The appointee's caseload will primarily comprise adult and paediatric general ENT, adult sleep surgery, and elective day-case operating, supported by appropriate outpatient and MDT activity. Annual departmental activity includes approximately:
- 12,000+ new and follow-up outpatient attendances per year (face-to-face and virtual)
- 3,000+ elective and day-case ENT procedures per year
- Active sleep surgery pathway with a growing case-mix in adult OSA
- Established paediatric ENT operating within dedicated paediatric DSU sessions
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The provisional job plan is for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week. This is detailed in the indicative timetable sown on the job description. The job plan will be reviewed at the annual job planning round and a formal review will be undertaken within 6 to 12 months of appointment, in line with RCS England guidance and the Trust's job planning policy. Elements of the timetable may be subject to change due to a Trust-wide reconfiguration of the theatre schedule; any such changes will be managed in accordance with service requirements and the Trust's job planning policy.

Essential
- Full registration and licence to practise with the General Medical Council (GMC).
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Otolaryngology, via one of: Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) — proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview; CESR / Portfolio pathway — applicant must be on the Specialist Register at the time of interview; or alternative routes to specialist registration — applicant must be on the Specialist Register at the time of interview.
Desirable
- Post-CCT fellowship in sleep surgery, complex sleep airway
- NHS consultant experience.
Qualifications
Essential
- FRCS (ORL-HNS) or equivalent intercollegiate higher surgical qualification in Otolaryngology — Head & Neck Surgery.
Desirable
- Higher academic degree (BSc, MSc, MD, PhD or equivalent).
Management and Audit
Essential
- Understanding of the principles of clinical governance and its implications for practice.
- Demonstrable commitment to safe and equitable consultant team-working in line with RCS England's Good Surgical Practice.
Desirable
- Evidence of service audit, service design, pathway redesign or change-management activity.
- Evidence of completed audits and quality improvement work with implementation of change.
Training and Teaching
Essential
- Experience of teaching and training undergraduates, postgraduates and junior / senior medical staff.
- Commitment to the educational supervision of resident doctors, SAS doctors and allied health professionals
Desirable
- Training the Trainers course or equivalent recognised teaching qualification.
- Experience as a recognised Clinical Supervisor and/or Assigned Educational Supervisor (AES).
- Formal educational qualification (e.g. PGCert in Medical Education).
Knowledge and Expertise
Essential
- Knowledge of NHS structures, NHS England commissioning, and the Integrated Care System (ICS) model.
- Familiarity with electronic patient record systems used in NHS practice (e.g. Cerner Millennium, ICE).
Desirable
- NHS experience within the last 3 years.
Research and Publications
Essential
- Knowledge of research methodology
- Evidence of ongoing interest and engagement in Sleep Surgery / OSA-related research, service evaluation or quality improvement.
Desirable
- Formal training in research methodology (e.g. GCP, MRes).
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals. Preferably relating to subspecialty interest
- Presentations to learned societies (national / international).
Specialty / Sub-specialty Expertise
Essential
- Sub-specialist training and/or fellowship in adult Sleep Surgery (palatal surgery, pharyngoplasty techniques, drug-induced sleep endoscopy/DISE).
- Broad-based general professional training in adult and paediatric ENT, including emergency ENT.
- Competence in routine paediatric ENT operating (e.g. grommets, adenotonsillectomy, paediatric airway endoscopy) consistent with the RCS England requirement that adult surgeons can manage common, non-specialised conditions in children.
- Demonstrable experience in the multidisciplinary management of adult Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA), working alongside respiratory medicine and sleep physiology services.
Desirable
- Experience of newer / advanced sleep surgery techniques (e.g. barbed pharyngoplasty, TORS for sleep apnoea, hypoglossal nerve stimulation / OSA implants).
- Experience of drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) reporting
- Sub-specialty fellowship in paediatric sleep / airway surgery.
