Job overview

Are you an experienced senior clinician with the ability to provide calm, strategic leadership during major incidents, periods of operational escalation and system-wide pressures?

North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a highly credible and experienced Strategic Medical Adviser (SMA) to join our Medical Directorate and support the Trust’s response to major incidents, mass casualty events and significant operational pressures across the North East healthcare system.

This is a unique and influential opportunity for a Consultant, GP Principal or equivalent senior clinician to work at the highest level of emergency preparedness, resilience and response, helping to ensure patients receive safe, effective and clinically-led care during some of the most challenging circumstances faced by the NHS.

Main duties of the job

The Strategic Medical Adviser plays a critical role in supporting the Trust’s Strategic Commander during major incidents and periods of excessive system demand. Acting as the senior clinical adviser within the command structure, you will provide expert strategic oversight, specialist medical advice and clinical leadership to support operational decision-making and patient flow across the region.

You will work closely with ambulance operational teams, Emergency Operations Centre colleagues, Acute Trusts, NHS England and partner agencies to coordinate clinical resources, support casualty distribution and help maintain safe and effective services during critical incidents.

The role may involve providing strategic clinical oversight within the Command Cell, Emergency Operations Centre or, where required, at the scene of an incident.
