An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Band 5 Staff Nurse to join the Intensive Care Unit at Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Our ICU provides specialist care for critically ill adult patients requiring advanced organ support, delivering high-quality, evidence-based care in a fast-paced and supportive environment.

We are a busy combined unit, comprising of 15 beds . We are providing care for adult ICU/HDU patients requiring medical or surgical emergency care, including the management of acute renal failure and a range of respiratory support strategies.

Main duties of the job

As a Band 5 Staff Nurse in the Intensive Care Unit, you will be responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating high-quality, patient-centred care for critically ill patients. You will monitor patients requiring advanced organ support, recognising and responding promptly to changes in their condition while maintaining accurate clinical documentation. Working closely with the multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to clinical decision-making, promote patient safety, and support quality improvement initiatives. You will provide compassionate support and clear communication to patients and their families throughout their critical care journey, while actively participating in ongoing education, mandatory training, and professional development to enhance your critical care knowledge and skills.

The post holder will work as part of the multidisciplinary Critical Care team to deliver high-quality, evidence-based nursing care to critically ill patients within the Intensive Care Unit and High Dependency Unit. They will practise in accordance with the NMC Code, Trust policies and procedures, and the Trust’s values of being compassionate, inclusive, collaborative and inspiring.

Key responsibilities include:

• Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualised nursing care for critically ill patients, ensuring care is delivered safely, effectively and compassionately.
• Demonstrate competence in the management of critically ill patients requiring advanced monitoring and organ support, following completion of the unit’s competency programme.
• Maintain accurate and timely electronic patient records and ensure all documentation meets professional and legal standards.
• Recognise and respond promptly to changes in patients’ conditions, escalating concerns appropriately and working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, effective care.
• Develop and maintain competence in the use of specialist critical care equipment, including invasive monitoring, ventilators, infusion devices and other equipment required within the Critical Care environment.
• Support patients’ families and carers by providing compassionate communication, information and involvement in decision-making where appropriate.
• Contribute to maintaining a safe clinical environment by identifying and managing risks, adhering to infection prevention and control standards, and promoting patient safety.
• Participate in quality improvement, audit and research activities to support the delivery of evidence-based practice and service development.
• Demonstrate effective resource management and contribute to the efficient use of equipment and clinical resources.
• Act as a positive role model, supporting the learning and development of students, healthcare support workers and colleagues within the clinical area.
• Maintain professional competence by participating in mandatory training, appraisal, clinical supervision and the Critical Care education pathway, working towards achievement of unit competencies and ongoing professional development.
• Work flexibly across the Critical Care service, contributing to the delivery of a high-quality, patient-centred service at all times.
