The role:

HMP Low Moss houses approximately 840 people from the age of 21 and above. The health care team has a multidisciplinary approach offering support in primary care, alcohol and drug recovery services and mental health. There is a variety of allied health professionals also attending to provide additional services and we work in partnership with the Scottish Prison Service. The post holder would be required to operate as part of an extensive multi-disciplinary team in the capacity of mental health nurse.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

  • HMP Low Moss
  • Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 15:48
  • Permanent, full-time
  • This post is primarily based at HMP Low Moss however can be moved between the four prison sites if needed to meet exigencies of the service

Key responsibilities:

  • Deliver comprehensive mental health nursing care including assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care programmes
  • Manage a defined caseload, acting as keyworker for individuals with complex mental health and social care needs
  • Work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team including primary care, addictions, psychiatry and prison services
  • Undertake risk assessments and contribute to care planning within the Care Programme Approach
  • Monitor, evaluate and report on patient progress, treatment outcomes and any changes in clinical presentation
  • Respond effectively to crisis situations and provide timely interventions within a secure environment
  • Maintain accurate, confidential clinical records and contribute to service development, audit and quality improvement

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

  • First level Registered Mental Health Nurse with current NMC registration
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent with post-registration experience in a relevant clinical setting
  • Knowledge of mental health legislation including the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003
  • Understanding of clinical governance, professional accountability and risk management in practice
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload and work independently
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage effectively with patients and colleagues
  • IT literate with experience of electronic record systems and a commitment to ongoing professional development
