Job overview

The Pain Management Clinic is a 6-bed day care unit that offers a wide variety of treatments and clinics for patients with chronic pain. You will be a key member of a specialist team of Consultant Anaesthetists, nurses, healthcare assistants and a dedicated administrative team committed to delivering the highest standards of care to patients through a variety of evidence-based approaches. The role involves responsibility for all aspects of patient care within the chronic pain management setting.

This is a diverse and dynamic position requiring flexibility, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team, in response to evolving service needs. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and professionally. The role is physically demanding and therefore requires a good level of physical fitness and manual dexterity.

The post holder will actively contribute to the ongoing development of the department and support the Trust in achieving its vision, values, and strategic objectives

Main duties of the job

The post holder will become a member of a specialised team delivering high standards of care to a group of patients via a variety of methods.   You will be responsible for all aspects of patient care within the chronic pain management setting.   The post encompasses a variety of roles, and you will be expected to be able to work both as a team member and autonomously, as the workload dictates.   To actively support the department and the Trust to meet the requirements expected to achieve the current vision and values.   Please Note: The Chronic Pain Management Service is under constant development. Staff must be willing to expand their role as the service evolves.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Supporting Clinical Excellence

  • Develop and maintain evidence-based knowledge and skills in the management and treatment strategies of chronic pain.
  • Participate in nurse-led clinics, providing high-quality, patient-centred care.
  • Support and collaborate with the Acute Pain Service as required.
  • Contribute actively to setting, maintaining, and auditing high standards of quality nursing care.
  • Work collaboratively and cooperatively with colleagues and members of the multidisciplinary team to meet the needs of patients, families, and carers.
  • Be responsible for the holistic assessment of care needs and the formulation, implementation, and evaluation of individualised care plans.
  • Always promote and maintain a safe and effective clinical environment.
  • Undertake nursing procedures and clinical techniques in accordance with Trust policies, guidelines, and professional standards.
  • Plan, develop, and implement approaches that promote patients’ health, wellbeing, and self-management.
  • Maintain awareness of current developments, research, and best practices in pain management to ensure the delivery of competent and efficient care.
  • Ensure the safe prescribing, supply, storage, administration, checking, and disposal of medications, including controlled drugs, in line with Trust policy and NMC standards.
  • Maintain accurate, comprehensive, and contemporaneous nursing documentation.
  • Assist in the organisation and day-to-day management of the clinical area to support smooth service delivery.
  • Once competent in team management skills, take charge of the clinical area on a regular basis in the absence of the person with continuing responsibility or their deputy

  • In the absence of the Junior Sister/Sister, act as the first point of contact for patients, relatives, and staff in addressing concerns and complaints, ensuring these are managed promptly and professionally.
  • Demonstrate courtesy, compassion, and professionalism at all times when interacting with patients, families, carers, colleagues, and all users of the Trust’s services, acting as a positive role model for the team.
  • Take responsibility for the assessment of care needs, and for the development, implementation, and evaluation of individualised care plans.
  • Work collaboratively and cooperatively with colleagues and members of the multidisciplinary team to meet the needs of patients and their families/carers.
  • Ensure patients, relatives, and carers are actively engaged in and have a clear understanding of treatment plans and care pathways.
  • Promote an open and transparent learning culture by reflecting on and sharing learning from clinical incidents, patient feedback, and staff experiences.
  • Coordinate safe and effective patient discharge arrangements in line with the Trust’s Local Discharge Policy

People/Management Excellence

  • Collaborate with all members of the clinical team to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the ward or clinic.
  • Assist the Sister in orienting new staff to their roles and responsibilities, acting as a mentor and source of guidance.
  • Promote and maintain a supportive learning environment for staff, acting as a facilitator, mentor, preceptor, and coach in the supervision and professional development of less experienced colleagues. Support the development and maintenance of staff competencies across all levels.
  • Maintain competent IT skills to access and manage patient information and reports using the Trust’s electronic and local systems.
  • Foster and support a positive culture of teamwork, cooperation, and mutual respect within the clinical area.

  • Use available resources effectively to provide high-quality patient care, maintaining an awareness of budgetary constraints.
  • Ensure the efficient and appropriate use of clinical, physical, and financial resources in line with Trust policies and best practice guidelines.

Essential

  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills

Knowledge and Experience

  • A minimum of 1 year post registration experience in an acute setting

Education Training and Qualifications

Essential

  • Level 1 RN Adult with NMC registration with right to work in the UK
