An opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated, qualified RN to be appointed as a band 5 on our Day Case Unit at Horton Hospital. We are looking to employ an enthusiastic and dynamic RN to complement our existing team.
Our ward consists of surgical and medical bays. We support a wide variety of surgical disciplines including general surgery, gynaecology, colorectal, endocrine, urology, breast surgery, vascular access, community dental, trauma, ENT and oral surgery.
We also undertake IBD infusions, blood transfusions and venesections in a separate bay on the unit.
Main duties of the job
As a member of the Day surgery team you will contribute by:-
- Assessing, planning, delivering and evaluation of patient care
- Delegation and supervision of junior grades, unqualified and less experienced staff
- Working with members of the Multi Disciplinary Team following local protocols and standards
- Awareness of the effective management of resources within the department
- Participate in clinical trials and research when required
- Provide a leadership role model and demonstrate specialist knowledge
- To admit, recover and discharge surgical patients.
- Cannulation of infusion patients.
- To work within the infusion setting administering IBD drugs as required.
- Adhering to high standards of clinical practice and provision of support or advice as required.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical
- To be responsible and accountable for assessing, planning and evaluating care for patients and his/her relative with direct supervision according to level of competency. Monitoring and assessing patient’s condition, responding to changes in condition, proposing / making changes to care plan as required.
- To recognise the nurses role in health education and incorporate this function within clinical practice whilst respecting the individuals rights and beliefs.
- To demonstrate the use of effective communication skills when dealing with patients and their families and to promote effective collaboration within the multidisciplinary team.
- To demonstrate and promote a patient-centre style of practice
- Handover and transferring responsibility of care of patients to colleagues, ensuring appropriate information and care is relayed
- To develop and expand within the role, with training, support and supervision, to be able to care for their patients holistically and to meet the clinical needs of the unit/ward and show commitment to learning
- To be aware of own limitations and development needs and actively seek to address these with support from mentor and the individual performance review process
- To contribute to the development, evaluation and audit of specialist protocols and guidelines in relation to the nursing care needs of the patients utilizing the service.
- To participate in and support research projects undertaken in the clinical area.
- To contribute to the ongoing auditing of nursing standards and take care on any recommendations.
- To plan, organise and prioritise own workload efficiently for a group of patients and to regularly co-ordinate the ward.
- To respond to emergencies by taking immediate action, requesting assistance/support as indicated, maintaining control and assisting with the support of patient/relative and junior staff.
- To appropriately report adverse incidents, according to local policy and to support members in doing the same.
- To ensure all equipment is stored, cleaned and operated safely according to Trust /local policy and to assist with the training of staff.
- To support senior staff and to supervise junior staff and students on a daily basis as required.
- To be actively involved in the orientation and induction of new staff.
- To maintain accurate and legible patient records whilst maintaining patient confidentiality.
- To access, input and interpret computer data entries whilst maintaining confidentiality including use of EPR [Electronic Patient Record].
- To demonstrate ability to concentrate for prolonged periods and to apply accuracy and attention to detail at all times.
- To follow trust policy for management of patients property and valuables.
- To support the implementation of quality initiatives within the clinical area and evaluate patient outcomes.
- To positively influence patient care by the application of research based practice.
- To be flexible/willing to assist all areas within the unit e.g. at times of sickness or increased work load.
- To utilise all resources efficiently and effectively and assist with the maintenance of stock levels for disposables and drugs through reporting and receiving items according to Local and Trust policy.
- To demonstrate dexterity, accuracy and attention to detail in the preparing of specialist equipment for procedures to be undertaken within the unit/ward whilst adhering to local and Trust policies.
- Working within guidelines of NMC Code of Practice.
- To be aware of the management of drugs and to adhere to local policies and administer drugs as prescribed using the EPR system
Managerial
- Monitoring and ordering of stocks and supplies, rotating stock as necessary and notify senior members of staff when applicable
- Supervision of CSWs, junior grades and less experienced staff within direct clinical area
- Lead a team when required during the shift session, ensuring a high standard of patient care is delivered and act as a shift coordinator as required after training.
- To develop management skill, and promote opportunities for self and others
- To maintain the professional profile of the unit and facilitate communications links with other departments
- To adhere to Trust, directorate and unit policies, protocols and guidelines
- To actively participate in projects that develops staff and the unit profile
- Contribute to the setting of local standards and policies as part of professional development
Education
- To demonstrate a commitment to professional development and maintain registration in line with NMC Revalidation requirements
- Mentoring and co-mentoring of qualified and unqualified staff
- Assist with establishing the training needs of individual team members
- Delivery of orientation and induction to new and less experienced members of staff
- Responsible for maintaining and updating own clinical knowledge and skills
- To complete mandatory study days as required by the Trust
- To actively participate in an individual performance review at agreed intervals, agreeing and completing a personal development plan with support from their named mentor
- To participate in a link nurse role as required by the needs of the unit.
General
- To undertake any other duties that may be requested by your manager in order to facilitate smooth running of the department
- To adhere to COSHH and infection control guidelines and policies [Trust and Local]
