Job overview

The Sterile Services department (SSD) provides essential services of reprocessing surgical instruments and Endoscopy for use in wards and departments within the trust and outside practices.

As an SSD Technician the post holder will have the opportunity to work within a friendly and skilled team, providing essential support to clinical service providers. You will be involved in the decontamination, inspecting, assembling, packaging, sterilising and distributing of surgical instrumentation to Wards, Departments, Theatres and Endoscopy.

The role is physically demanding, involving pushing, pulling, lifting and handling heavy instrument sets and long periods of standing. Also, it is necessary to transport theatre equipment around the hospital using trolleys.

The successful candidate will be required to work a pattern of weekend shifts and 2 Bank Holidays in the year.

  • To liaise with service users on routine matters.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and the Team Leader(s).
  • Collection of used items from departments, theatres and wards throughout the hospital site as required.
  • Sorting, checking and processing used surgical instruments and other items using appropriate machinery.
  • Attain familiarity with surgical instruments and their use and demonstrate ability to dismantle and reassemble instruments ready for surgery.

  • Assembling, packing and labelling instrument sets and supplementary items in accordance with accepted standards.
  • Attain familiarity with surgical instruments and their use and demonstrate ability to dismantle and reassemble instruments ready for surgery.
  • Demonstrate competency in inspecting instrumentation for cleanliness, damage and function.
  • Ensure that quality and standards are met and goods produced are fit for the purpose intended.
  • To understand and be able to use the Medical Device Tracking and Traceability systems.
  • To distribute sterile packs and trays to departments and wards as required.
