Job summary
The Walton Centre Speech and Language Therapy service is comprised of a highly specialised group of individuals skilled in the asessment, diagnosis and management of patients with highly complex neurological and spinal conditions. Our specialist areas of input include services in neurovascular surgery, neuro-oncology, major trauma, spinal conditions and neurological illness. From admission to our intensive care unit or acute wards, SLTs are involved in the provision of care for patients from the very earliest stage of their treatment journey. Our input includes provision of well-established FEES and videofluoroscopy services, an embedded and central role in the trust's tracheostomy MDT and formal assessment of patients presenting as being in a Prolonged Disorder of Consciousness. We are seeking highly motivated, ambitious team workers who are keen to develop their skills in the assessment, diagnosis and management of complex swallowing and communication disorders. Available are two roles: one at 1.0WTE and another at 0.9WTE. The successful candidate will benefit from new-employee preceptorship, a structured supervision programme, and support to develop specific competencies in the management of neurological and spinal patients with a range of rare conditions and unique clinical, social and personal needs.
Working within the acute setting, the post holder will offer assessment and treatment as clinically indicated with support from senior staff when required.
Main duties of the job
1.
- T To provide assessment, diagnosis, advice and treatment of patients with complex acquired communication and swallowing disorders.
- To record assessment and therapy results in medical records and Speech and Language case notes.
3. To liaise with other members of the Multi-disciplinary team, such as doctors, nurses and other Allied Health Professionals, and inform them of assessment results.
4. To train and advise carers and staff involved in inpatient care, as appropriate.
5. To make decisions regarding timing of discharge from the service based on outcomes of clinical interventions.
6. To liaise with other teams, agencies, and Speech and Language Therapists in referring for follow-up on discharge from hospital.
7 To carry out day to day administration of the Acquired Neurological Service.
8. To be responsible for ordering and maintaining records of communication aids for patients with Acquired Neurological Disorders
9. To attend ward meetings and case conferences where possible.
10. To maintain appropriate and regular case records.
11. To keep accurate statistical information in accordance with departmental policy.
12. To attend Speech and Language Therapy meetings.

Essential
- Degree in Speech and Language Therapy
- Registered member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT)
- Registered member of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
- Post graduate dysphagia training

- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Ability to recognize own training needs.
- Able to maintain sensitivity at all times to the emotional needs of the client and their carers, in particular when imparting potentially distressing information regarding the nature of the clients difficulties and implications of the same.
- Good insight into professional boundaries and when to refer on/ seek further advice.
- To demonstrate adherence to Trust Values at all times.
- Understanding of efficacy / outcome measures.
Knowledge & Experience
Essential
- Knowledge and application of different assessments and therapy approaches for speech, language and communication impairments.
- Experience of delivering Speech and Language Therapy interventions to adults.
- Knowledge and application of different forms of dysphagia therapy
Desirable
- Experience of delivering Speech and Language Therapy interventions to adults within an acute setting.
- Experience of Videofluoroscopy use and interpretation.
- Experience of working with adults with prolonged disorders of consciousness.
- Experience of tracheostomy management.
