There is a fantastic opportunity for a highly motivated, enthusiastic person to join the Radiotherapy Engineering team at Clatterbridge. The team is responsible for the maintenance and repair of sophisticated linear accelerators and peripheral technology used in the treatment of cancer.

We are seeking to recruit an experienced engineer, however, lesser experienced people or engineering graduates may be considered at lower grades. You must show enthusiasm for the role, aptitude for engineering, be a self-starter and eager to learn new technology.

The Liverpool site is our flagship site and is soon to operate 4 Varian Truebeam, 2 Halcyon linear accelerators, low-voltage XStrahl Orthovoltage treatment unit and Ariane Papillon unit, as well as Elekta Brachytherapy and Siemens CT services.

The Wirral site has 3 Varian Truebeam linear accelerators, and Siemens CT. It also has the Douglas Cyclotron as part of the National Centre for Eye Proton Therapy.

The Aintree site has 2 Varian Truebeam linear accelerators.

All 3 must be supported by the Engineering team and you may be asked to work at any site.

Main duties of the job

You must be skilled at fault finding complex electronic systems and with good attention to detail, and be able to focus working under pressure. Relevant experience working on radiation equipment and/or complex, high capital value, large scale equipment, where maintaining up-time under pressure is required, is desirable. Mechanical aptitude, and computer networking/advanced IT skills would also be an advantage.

The post holder is required to be a member of the RCT for the Radiation Engineering discipline. If you do not hold this, you are welcome to apply but may be placed on Annex21 or Band 5 (depending on background) whilst obtaining the necessary competency for registration (typical timeframe to registration is 2 - 3 years for someone who hasn't worked in radiotherapy engineering before).

Applicants must have good communication skills and be able to work effectively both independently and within multidisciplinary teams.

Applicants should be able to work unsocial hours, during evenings and weekends if required, and within a rota system. During training, increased weekend work (upto 12 per year) and early/late work (between 7am and 9pm with 7.5 hour shifts) across any of our sites is required to gain experience, so you must be mobile and flexible. There can be lone working aspects to the job once fully trained.

There may be a requirement to visit sites and attend training courses external to the Trust.
