Main duties of the job

To work as the named School Nurse for an identified High School/College and a cluster of Primary schools.

To manage the defined caseload, using a public health approach to provide and maintain a high-quality service that promotes the health and wellbeing of the school-aged population and their families.

To lead to the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme 5–19 and co-ordinate the delivery of public health interventions with a focus on implementing early help intervention, reducing health inequalities and improving health outcomes for children, young people, their families and the community. School Nurses in WWL will apply a public health approach to the universal programme, targeted and specialist packages of care and interventions as stipulated by the Healthy Child Programme, ensuring that support is delivered universally while providing additional targeted intervention according to the level of identified need and risk.

To provide leadership to other members of the 0-19, inclusive of preceptorship, supervision, Personal Development Reviews and one-to-ones. They will give professional advice and support to parents, carers, health team members and other partners within the health arena.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The role leads the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme across universal, targeted and specialist levels, building community capacity and responding to the health needs of children, young people and families. It involves assessing health needs, planning and coordinating care, delivering health promotion, and providing early intervention through partnership working with schools, families and multi‑agency teams.

Key responsibilities include managing a school nursing caseload, analysing data to inform service planning, supporting mental and physical wellbeing, safeguarding children, and ensuring effective signposting and referral pathways. The role requires delivering therapeutic interventions, offering accessible support to young people, and ensuring children not in school still receive the universal offer.

Clinically, the postholder must maintain NMC registration, keep accurate records, stay up to date with evidence‑based practice, manage time effectively, and understand medicines management. Leadership duties include supervising staff, delegating tasks, supporting team development, contributing to service improvement, and developing specialist expertise.

The role also involves leading and participating in clinical audit, supporting research, and using findings to improve practice. Communication responsibilities include working sensitively with families, sharing information appropriately, contributing to multi‑agency work, and promoting a culture where concerns can be raised safely.
