A promising opportunity has emerged to enhance the sleep service by incorporating the Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) located in West Swindon. The selected candidates will be required to work at the Great Western Hospital, Moredon medical centre and the West Swindon site.
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced nurse to develop their clinical skills and knowledge within the sleep service / ventilation team. The Team diagnoses and treats patients with obstructive sleep apnoea, movement disorders, and sleep-disordered breathing. The team predominately looks after outpatients who require sleep studies and NIV and CPAP treatment but also reviews some inpatients who require sleep studies or any guidance on NIV.
The successful applicant must have up-to-date respiratory skills and knowledge to ensure. It will be required to work autonomously and within a friendly team. Good communication and teamwork skills are essential.

Main duties of the job
The Sleep Specialist Nurse will act as an autonomous clinical practitioner, providing specialist nursing care, education and advice to patients, their carers and other health care professionals regarding management of their condition. The post holder will be a valued member of the Sleep and Ventilation service providing assessment, care, support, and advice for patients undergoing sleep studies and treatments for sleep disordered breathing. To work within defined policies in conjunction with the Band 7 Respiratory Nurse, promoting and maintaining excellent, safe practice and continuing to develop the role of the nurse specialist.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To prepare and set up new patients on Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). This involves patient assessment, explanation of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and CPAP therapy, mask fitting, trial of CPAP equipment and downloading compliance data.
- To plan and organise setting up new patients on non-invasive ventilation, this also includes explanation into therapy, mask fitting and trial of NIV equipment and downloading compliance data and taking appropriate action as necessary.
- To deal with complex and sensitive clinical queries from new and long-term CPAP and NIV users over the telephone and by email, where there may be barriers to understanding and where is empathy is required.
- To provide home sleep studies equipment and oximetry in an outpatient basis
