Main duties of the job

An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated senior nurse to join the management team at Hamwic House as a Sister/Charge Nurse for a full time position and 1 year secondment covering a maternity leave. Hamwic

House is a busy outpatient department which provides services for adult cancer patients including SACT (systemic anti-cancer therapies), blood product transfusions, and supportive therapies, as well as phlebotomy services, PICC insertions and oncology outpatient clinics. The applicant should be qualified and experienced in SACT administration.

The successful applicant will be reporting to the Band 7 and will support them in the management of the nursing team which includes staff nurses, healthcare assistants and housekeepers. They will have the opportunity to oversee the management of a small team by completing yearly IPRS, manage sickness, performance and support development opportunities.

The role of Band 6 at Hamwic House includes the nurse in charge role which involves coordinating the flow of the unit, communicating with pharmacy and the SACT coordination teams, ensuring safe staffing levels, and supporting junior team members with complex issues. The applicant should possess excellent communication skills and stress management to be effective in this role as it requires them to manage multiple issues at once whilst always remaining calm and professional.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a Band 6 in cancer care you will be expected to be the cancer care bleep holder who oversees the staffing levels for the care group with support from the matron team. As bleep holder you may be contacted to support other cancer care wards who are struggling with acutely or staffing and may be asked to administer SACT outside the care group footprint.

You will be supported in your personal development to attend study days which will support you in this role such as leadership courses, advanced communication and training in HR processes.

For this role the applicant should be:

-Qualified and experienced in SACT administration,  -Other key clinical skills are competencies in cannulation and venesection, CVAD care and IV therapy administration including blood products.  - Enthusiastic and proactive in providing excellent care for all our patients and supporting the team.  - Excellent time management, communication skills, and professionalism.  - Able to manage complaints effectively with empathy and compassion.  -Proactive in problem solving and managing situation by escalating appropriately.  -Good role modelling to junior members of staff.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

Essential

  • Qualified Nurse (Degree/Diploma)
  • Registered nurse on appropriate part of the register
  • Significant post registration experience / qualification / training, including experience and knowledge within relevant speciality
  • Ward management experience
  • Knowledge of current issues within acute Health Service
  • Experience in an acute hospital setting
  • Provide evidence of supporting / managing a range of learners in practice
  • Provide evidence of supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice
  • Ability to demonstrate clinical decision making and judgement
  • Commitment to the post and Care Group responsibilities
  • Commitment to continuing professional development
