Job summary

Newcastle Sexual Health Team have an exciting opportunity for a passionate and committed Sexual Health Specialist Nurse. We are looking for a qualified sexual health nurse, who is friendly and enthusiastic, with a flexible approach to provide support to the clinical team. This is a permanent full/part-time position, which will predominantly be based within the community sexual health clinic at Newcastle Sexual Health Service in Summerhill. However, there may be times when the employee would need to work at Gateshead Trinity Square Health Centre and Palmers Community Hospital in Jarrow and outreach clinical locations.

We are a friendly, community based, multi-disciplinary team. We are committed to delivering high quality, integrated sexual health care for the local population, our service includes both contraceptive and genito-urinary medicine. The post-holder must be able to maintain a sensitive and non-judgemental approach to support patients with their sexual health needs.

Main duties of the job

The sexual health service is part of the community directorate within South Tyneside and Sunderland Foundation Trust.

The successful candidate will be an experienced Specialist Sexual Health Nurse, and:

Demonstrate they have previous experience working within an integrated sexual health service

Maintain and respect strict confidentiality standards for service users

Maintain a sensitive and non-judgemental approach when working with service users

The post holder will be required to work evening and weekend duties as part of a monthly roster.

The post holder will be required to travel between clinic locations and for meetings as necessary.

The post holder will work effectively as part of the wider sexual health team and demonstrate excellent communication skills.

To co-ordinate the delivery and development of the sexual health service using effective evidence-based practice in line with agreed national standards for patient safety and monitoring.

To be accountable for the planning and delivery of safe, effective, and compassionate patient care in relation to dedicated pathways of care working as an autonomous practitioner.

To continuously improve clinical care standards in line with the clinical governance framework.

To exercise accountability as set out in the NMC Code of Conduct.

To ensure effective communication internally and externally regarding patient care and resources.

Provide education and training to clinical staff across the Trust.

Provide specialist clinical advice and support to patients and clinical staff within the Trust on the management and care of patients within sexual health.

To provide direct access for patients, either face to face or telephone consultation.

To represent the service nationwide.

To play a key role in ensuring that national and local standards/targets for the sexual health are met.

To manage/lead practitioner led clinics in relation to reviewing patients and play a key role in optimising complex treatment regimes.

To undertake research relevant to the needs of the specialist area.

Person specification

Experience

Essential

  • Previous clinical experience of working within an integrated sexual health setting.
  • Experience of leading a team or experience of supervising junior staff.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Current 1st level NMC registration.
  • Degree in nursing studies or relevant clinical degree (UK equivalent).
  • Practice assessor training or demonstrable equivalent experience.
  • Recognised competency-based qualifications in integrated sexual health e.g., Management of Sexually Transmitted Infections and Contraception in Practice, or Integrated Sexual Health Module, or equivalent.
  • Evidence of competency achievement in Sub-dermal implant insertion and removal or willingness to complete.
  • Evidence of Cervical cytology qualification or willingness to complete.

Desirable

  • Non-medical prescribing or willingness to complete

Physical Skills

Essential

  • Developed physical skills with a need for accuracy to undertake for example:
  • oVenepuncture
  • oAdministration of local anaesthetic
  • oInsertion of contraceptive implant
  • Basic keyboard skills.
  • Use of electronic resources to input, save and provide data and information, making full use of the electronic record system.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Evidence of innovation in practice
  • Evidence of practice development
  • Awareness of national health and social care policy
  • Knowledge of best practice in sexual and reproductive health
  • Knowledge of current issues relating to health service provision and the public health agenda.
