Job overview

This post is aimed at a Senior Clinical Fellow who would like to gain additional experience/surgical skills in Neuro-oncology. This post has been developed to support the neuro-oncology service increase the outpatient and inpatient capacity to meet existing demand and growth for Neurosurgical services, across Coventry and Warwickshire. The post supports a 1:10 on call rota.

Main duties of the job

To provide, in collaboration with clinical colleagues, a comprehensive Neurosurgery service to patients in the Coventry and Warwickshire area. This will include ensuring that all appropriate waiting lists and waiting times are adhered to; that services are provided in an effective and efficient manner and that the principles of risk management and clinical governance are maintained at all times. Whilst this position is not a formal RCS approved fellowship, the successful applicant will be given the opportunity to work alongside the existing Neuro-oncology surgeons to obtain experience and skills in a range of Neuro-oncology procedures (pending RCS approval) including:

  • Image guided brain biopsy.
  • Day case Neuro-oncology surgery.
  • Image guided Intra-axial brain tumour debulking/resection.
  • Ultrasound guided tumour resections.
  • 5 ALA guided resections.
  • Awake craniotomy.
  • Cortical and subcortical mapping.
  • Resection of supratentorial, infratentorial and spinal benign lesions.

Weekly attendance at Neuro-oncology MDT & Neuro-oncology Clinics with close liaison with Neuro-oncology Clinical Nurse Specialists.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • a)    Undertake appropriate audits in Neuro-oncology under supervision of the Neuro-oncology team – one Neuro-oncology audit is mandatory. b)    Provide, and develop further with clinical colleagues, neurosurgical services for the Trust in collaboration with colleagues in all disciplines including primary and tertiary care, where appropriate, to provide an integrated service for patients. c)    Attend Neurooncology clinics. d)    Attend daily ward rounds for inpatients when onward duty. e)    Facilitate timely discharge of patients. f)     Participate in the consultation service and advisory service to other clinical colleagues in other specialties within the Trust and Primary Care. g)    Participate in the development of the neurosurgery service, treatment protocols and guidelines and the greater knowledge in the management of neurosurgical conditions. h)    Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialties and participate in regular clinical meetings and other post graduate activities. i)     Participate in the on-call rota (includes prospective cover) so that appropriate emergency services are provided out-of-normal working hours. j)     Take responsibility for the professional supervision and development of trainee doctors within the specialty. k)    Develop and maintain good communications with General Practitioners and appropriate external agencies. l)     Demonstrate a firm involvement in Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Audit – this will include the development and maintenance of appropriate systems and practices to ensure continued safe clinical practice. Ensure attendance at appropriate governance meetings. m)  Ensure own practice is up-to-date; this will include taking responsibility for own Clinical Professional Development and participating in the Trust’s Performance and Annual Review system. n)    Share responsibility for data protection arising out of the use of computers.
  • )    Accountable for improving and complying with infection control practices. p)    Comply with all relevant Trust Policies and Procedures. q)    Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults is your responsibility. Familiarisation with and adherence to UHCW Safeguarding policies and Coventry and Warwickshire Safeguarding Board procedures is an essential requirement of all employees, as is the participation in related mandatory training.

Essential

  • • Previous medical training over and above PRHO/FY1. • Relevant recent experience at middle grade (registrar) level in Neurosurgery.

  • • CCT

Knowledge/ Skills

Essential

  • • Competence in the clinical skills appropriate to your background specialty. • Knowledge of methods of medical audit. • Understanding of the Clinical Governance process. • Ability to organise and manage one’s own clinical work. • Competent in basic information technology. • Understanding of the concepts of management. • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Desirable

  • • Further skills in information technology. • Awareness of health service reforms and issues across healthcare economy.

Teaching/ Education

Essential

  • • Commitment to continuing medical education (attend conferences, research/publish papers, audits, attendance at relevant meetings). • Undertaken a complete audit cycle. • Ability to use clinical audit to improve standards of care for patients.

Desirable

  • • Ability to design and deliver talks/lectures/workshops effectively. • Experienced in demonstrating clinical procedures/techniques to other healthcare professionals. • Ability to participate in teaching and training of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
