Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as a highly specialist practitioner implementing and developing a community based therapeutic service to expectant parents, infants, and their families with a particular focus on early intervention and preventative work with high risk and vulnerable families (e.g. socially excluded families).  S/he will provide assessment and treatment of the parent-infant relationship, working with parents/carers and infants grounded in the principles and techniques of psychoanalytic psychotherapy/Clinical Psychology.

The training and strategic development aspect of the role involves acting as a specialist resource, and contributing to multi-agency training of relevant professionals across the borough. The post holder will be expected to offer consultation and clinical supervision to professional colleagues.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Deliver an Under 2s psychotherapy/clinical psychology service within CAMHS in a multi-agency context.
  • Provide specialist psychoanalytic psychotherapy/psychological assessments for expectant parents, parents and infants with complex and enduring mental health needs.
  • Formulate and implement evidence-based therapeutic interventions from referral onwards, considering developmental and historical factors.
  • Contribute to the development of specialist parent–infant provision using recognised models of practice.
  • Offer consultation, advice and expertise to PIMH colleagues and wider professional networks.
  • Manage and prioritise a clinical caseload within the PIMH service.
  • Participate in the PIMH duty rota, providing advice and support to professionals and families.
  • Attend and contribute to team meetings, referrals, CPD and business meetings.
  • Contribute as an independent clinician to multi-disciplinary and multi-agency meetings.
  • Liaise effectively with external professionals and services.
  • Contribute to audit, evaluation and evidence-based practice.
  • Maintain autonomous professional responsibility in line with ACP/HCPC standards.
  • Participate in service development and communicate effectively within the MDT.

Person specification

Knowledge

Essential

  • Evidence of awareness of perinatal/parental mental health in relation to infant/child mental health matters
  • Evidence of clinical supervision
  • Knowledge of legislation and national guidance in relation to the needs of infants and young children.
  • Doctoral level (or equivalent) knowledge of child and adolescent psychotherapy/ clinical psychology, including highly developed knowledge of psychoanalytical/psychological theories and models of development, psychopathology, family and institutional dynamics.
  • Working knowledge of professional systems involved in work with infant and young children, particularly in relation to the statutory framework around child protection

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working with patient groups presenting high levels of complexity and trauma, including infants, young children and families.
  • Experience of consulting with other professionals in Health, Education, Social Services and Local Authority.
  • Experience of representing child psychotherapy /clinical psychology within the context of multidisciplinary and multi-agency treatment and care.

Desirable

  • Experience of working in CAMHS and/or with infants and young children, prior to training as a Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist /clinical psychologist

Essential

  • Skills in the use of psychoanalytical/psychological methods of assessment, intervention and management in work with infants, and young children and families.
  • Skills in co-working, liaison and consultation with others, especially with regard to highly complex families.
  • Evidence of a capacity to work collaboratively and flexibly in a multi-disciplinary team context.
  • High level of skill in assessing risk in the context of parent infant mental health and with young children.
  • Ability to work with people from different backgrounds, cultures and ethnicity from one’s own.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity in all contact with disadvantaged groups.
  • High level of ability to communicate effectively (both written and verbal) complex, technical and clinically sensitive information to children, parents and carers and a wide range of professionals.
  • Ability to cope with stressful interpersonal situations, including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse and communicate in situations in which there may be barriers to the acceptance of communications.

Education / Qualifications

Essential

  • Doctorate level qualification as a Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist as recognised by the Association of Child Psychotherapists. AND Full membership of the Association of Child Psychotherapists OR Doctorate level training in clinical psychology, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical, psychometrics, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the BPS or BPS Statement of Equivalence AND Eligibility for Chartered Clinical Psychology Status & HCPC registered.

Desirable

  • Parent-Infant Psychotherapy Training
  • Additional Training in other relevant evidence-based Parent-Infant interventions
