We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented individual to support the effective operation of the Homecare Service at Wye Valley NHS Trust. Working under the guidance of the Lead ATO – Homecare Services, Lead Pharmacy Technician – High Cost Drugs & Homecare, and Lead Pharmacist – High Cost Drugs & Homecare, the post holder will contribute to the Pharmacy Procurement service while ensuring the smooth running of Homecare services through adherence to SOPs and compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements. The role requires effective communication with a wide range of internal and external colleagues to resolve issues relating to Homecare medicines and prescriptions, as well as undertaking tasks under the supervision of the Procurement Management Team, including the Lead Pharmacy Technician and Senior Pharmacy Technician for Procurement, with appropriate escalation of issues to ensure safe and efficient service delivery. Responsibilities will also include procurement activities linked to medicines and materials, including ordering and invoicing using pharmacy stock control systems and the Trust’s main procurement systems.
Main duties of the job
Homecare and High Cost Drug Administrative Responsibilities
- To ensure that all records are maintained following local Standard Operating Procedures
- To ensure all documentation is scanned, filed, kept up to date and archived where necessary following the legal requirements for the retention of pharmaceutical records
- To ensure that all excluded from tariff medicines are individually costed to each patient on the Pharmacy Ascribe (EMIS) system to provide accurate details required for HCD funding e.g. responsible consultant team
Procurement Administrative Responsibilities
- To respect and maintain the confidentiality of patients, colleagues, commercial information and legal implications of medicines procurement, storage and distribution at all times
- To raise orders for pharmaceutical items including medical gases by using the purchasing system and submit them to authorised personnel for signature.
- To use electronic systems to directly order medicines via e-ordering.
- To use discretion in the processing of orders for medicines considering the degree of urgency, possible financial implications and be responsible to the Lead Pharmacy Technician for Procurement for such action taken.
- To ensure suppliers and delivery methods are chosen for the best balance of speed and cost

Skills
Essential
- Demonstrated knowledge of a range of Pharmacy procurement procedures, including routines and non-routine tasks, such as handling medicine shortages, recalls and urgent supplies
- Knowledge of medicines legislation, storage requirements and safe disposal practices to ensure safe and compliant handling of pharmaceutical products
- IT Literate in routine Microsoft applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel etc)
- Able to concentrate with attention to detail and accuracy
Experience
Essential
- Experience of using electronic ordering systems and stock control systems to process orders, monitor stock levels and identify discrepancies
- Experience of working in compliance with Standard Operating Procedures
Desirable
- Experience within a Pharmacy Procurement environment, or experience within an equivalent healthcare services procurement department
- Experience within a Pharmacy SUPPLY environment, or experience within an equivalent healthcare services SUPPLIES department
Qualifications
Essential
- Level 2 in Pharmaceutical Services or Unit accreditation within their specialised area or equivalent
- Willing to work towards completion of NVQ Level 2 in Pharmaceutical Services within 12 months of starting role
- 4 GCSEs to include Maths, English and one Science subject or equivalent experience
