Job overview

We have a vacancy for an enthusiastic, well-motivated secretary to join our medical secretarial team within the surgery and Critical care division at Royal Lancaster Infirmary or Westmorland General Hospital or Furness General Hospital. Current or recent Secretarial experience, with a typing qualification is desirable, together with excellent English language skills.  Knowledge of medical terminology and IT systems would be an advantage, although training will be given.

Working as part of a small team, you will be required to liaise with patients and a number of internal and external departments, agencies and providers; therefore highly developed communication skills are essential.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to provide a robust and comprehensive secretarial and administration service to the Specialty team, Service Managers, Senior Medical Staff and their teams.

Main duties involve:

  • Creating letters and typing of clinical letters
  • Being the crucial point of contact for patients and care providers
  • Provide administration and secretarial support to the speciality
  • Responsible for all aspects of a named clinicians administration
  • Daily use of Microsoft office packages.
  • To organise and attend meetings when required
  • Ability to take minutes for meetings.
  • Checking and updating patient information e.g. results and discharges
  • Answering patient queries via telephone
