Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity for a passionate and motivated experienced professional nurse with or without haematology/haemophilia nursing experience to join the dedicated Haemophilia team at University Hospitals Southampton. We are a regional Comprehensive Care Centre, providing expert advice and care to patients across Hampshire, IOW, Guernsey and Jersey. The role will comprise care of inpatients, outpatients and assessment and treatment of acute walk-in patients on the Haemophilia Unit based at UHS. There will be opportunities to work autonomously, carrying out independent assessments and triage, and reviewing patients in the nurse led clinics. The successful candidate will be supported by the wider multidisciplinary Haemophilia team, including the CNS team, Haematology Lead Nurse and Matron, Clinical registrars, Clinical Psychologists, lab staff and Haematology Consultants.

The recruitment team at the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) are delighted to be able to offer a fantastic opportunity for a patient focussed friendly and enthusiastic individual to join our expanding service. The Southampton Haemophilia Centre provides specialist care to over 1000 adults and children with inherited and acquired bleeding disorders, platelet disorders and TTP.

The Haemophilia Clinical Nurse Specialist will work within the heart of the busy Haemophilia Centre. They will be supported by the wider multidisciplinary Haemophilia team, including the CNS team, Haemostasis Lead Nurse and Matron, Registrars, Clinical Psychologists, Haematology Consultants, Specialist Physiotherapists and the Anticoagulation lab staff. There will be opportunities to work autonomously, carrying out independent assessments and triage, and reviewing patients in the nurse led clinic. Clinical skills that are desirable for the role, but not essential as training will be supported, include phlebotomy experience and intravenous access competence for administration of clotting factor.

As part of this role, you will be supported to attend the level 6 /7 Contemporary Care of People with Bleeding Disorders to enhance essential skills, gain specialist qualifications and support development in this highly specialised role. This course is essential the job. Other MSc ACP modules- Diagnostic assessment and decision making, Motivational Interviewing and health behaviour change desirable. This post is also supported by the Roald Dahl's Marvellous Children's Charity who provides specialist nurses with support and education to care for seriously ill children and families living with lifelong conditions.  The Haemophilia Nurse Specialist will need to work within tight timeframes and will require good prioritisation and time management skills. It is essential that the post holder has experience within the NHS setting. Experience or knowledge of Haemophilia Care and Benign Haematology is highly desirable.  There will also be opportunities to continue or train in Therapeutic Plasma Exchange/Apheresis if desired as part of the TTP cross coverage aspect of the job.
