Clinical Leadership & Governance • Lead the Respiratory Medicine service, ensuring clinical standards are met and continuously improved. • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to ensure timely and effective patient care. • Promote evidence-based practice and contribute to clinical audit and quality improvement initiatives. Service Development • Identify opportunities for service redesign and innovation within specialist medicine. • Support the implementation of national and local policies relevant to Respiratory Medicine Care. • Lead on transformation projects aimed at improving patient outcomes and operational efficiency.

Workforce & Education
- Support the development of junior medical staff, advanced clinical practitioners, and nursing colleagues within Respiratory Medicine.• Champion leadership development opportunities, including apprenticeship pathways and master’s programmes, to build future clinical leaders.• Facilitate regular teaching, supervision, and clinical skills development sessions.
Mentorship & Professional Development
- Actively promote mentorship opportunities with the Deputy Medical Director (DMD) and Deputy Chief Medical Officer (DCMO) to support leadership growth and clinical excellence.
- Encourage reflective practice and career development planning among team members. Collaboration & Communication• Work closely with operational managers, specialty leads, and executive teams to ensure alignment of clinical and strategic priorities.• Represent specialist medicine in relevant trust-wide committees and external forums.
Prime Responsibilities:
- Provide clinical leadership for the Respiratory Medicine service, ensuring high standards of patient care, safety, and operational effectiveness. • Lead and support service improvement initiatives aligned with trust priorities and national best practice. • Act as a role model for clinical excellence, professionalism, and compassionate leadership. • Support the development of junior and senior clinical staff, with a focus on leadership development opportunities such as apprenticeship pathways and master’s level programmes. • Facilitate mentorship opportunities with the Deputy Medical Director (DMD) and Deputy Chief Medical Officer (DCMO) to nurture emerging clinical leaders and strengthen governance. • Collaborate with divisional and trust-wide teams to ensure effective patient flow, escalation processes, and clinical decision-making. • Contribute to workforce planning, recruitment, and retention strategies with Respiratory Medicine. • Represent Respiratory Medicine at divisional and trust-level meetings, ensuring the voice of the service is heard in strategic discussions Section 3.
Person specification
General
Essential
- Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent)
- Full and Specialist registration (with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- UK-trained applicants must hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview
- Non-UK trained applicants must show evidence of equivalence to UK CCT and be on the GMC Specialist Register or applying via CESR
- Experience delivering high-quality clinical care while maintaining patient safety and adhering to national standards (e.g., GIRFT, NHS performance targets).
- Proven track record of leading or contributing to clinically driven service improvement or transformation initiatives.
- Training and experience in optimising theatre utilisation, patient flow, and perioperative efficiency.
- Broad experience of working within the NHS
IT Skills
Essential
- Ability to use Microsoft office packages, e.g. MS Word, Excel, Access & PowerPoint.
- Ability to use patient information systems
Clinical Audit
Essential
- Active audit interest demonstrated by at least one completed clinical audit in the last 12 months.
- Understanding of NHS systems and audit processes
- Evidence of service improvement projects and audits
Desirable
- Publication of audit results.
- Evidence of embedding governance processes to monitor outcomes, safety, and service performance.
Programme Delivery
Essential
- Strong commitment to delivering change and high performance through effective collaboration with management and clinical teams
- Ability to analyse complex problems and to develop practical and workable solutions to address them.

- Experience in conducting and supporting audits, improvement and service transformation projects

Teaching Experience

- Experience and interest in undergraduate teaching
- Skill and ability in formal and informal teaching for both under/postgraduate students and nursing/midwifery staff
- Educational supervision accreditation

- An understanding of current issues in medical education and training
- Previous experience in trainee Supervision
- Higher teaching qualification
- Presentations at National or International meetings
- Publications in peer reviewed journals
Management and Administrative Experience
