
Job summary
You will provide healthcare equitable to the community to children and young people in custody at Oakhill STC, the post holder will be into the Healthcare MDT and provide strategic development in relation to the general nursing provision. Healthcare delivered should be evidenced based, person-centred, and non-judgemental. In accordance with the NMC code, the post holder shall exchange knowledge, abilities, and experience to foster an open, learning atmosphere and motivate team members to pursue further professional growth.
Main duties of the job
This exciting and challenging role offers a unique opportunity for a Registered General Nurse to join the secure healthcare team. As a member of a multidisciplinary team, the post holder will be required to administer medication, complete assessments, triage children and be responsible for the health of the children within the secure establishment. The post holder will be required to work with children in a trauma informed, holistic approach considering a variety of complex needs.
The post holder will play a vital role in reshaping the service environment, creating opportunities for improved outcomes for all children and young people residing at Oakhill STC.
About us
Oakhill Secure Training Centre is a custodial environment for children both females and males between the ages of 12 years old and 18 years old. Children may present with complex wellbeing and mental health needs, undiagnosed neurodivergent needs and complex trauma.
This role sits within the healthcare team, consisting of Head of Healthcare, Primary Care Lead, Mental Health & SMS Lead, Assistant & Trainee Psychologists, Qualified Psychologist, Speech and Language Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Psychiatrist, Registered Mental Health Nurses and Registered General Nurses.

Job responsibilities
Main Duties
- Complete medication rounds in the units and dispense controlled medication
- Attend emergency response situations, these include restraints (observation only) and or life-threatening emergencies and complete post incident are and paperwork
- Assess children on admission the centre within appropriate timeframes
- Triage and assess childrens health needs
- Refer children to any other primary or secondary healthcare professionals
- Chase information regarding children from external agencies.
- Management and care of minor illness and injuries
- Be the named lead nurse for an area of healthcare
- To play a key role in the focus of delivering trauma-informed practice
- To ensure effective pre-release care planning.
- To undertake comprehensive assessments and to the Multi-disciplinary Team, ensuring that planned care is individual and appropriate to the needs of the patient
- To work across systems/providers in the locality to ensure effective pathways for children and young people
Professional
- To fully observe relevant Professional Practice Guidelines.
- To work with Professional Leads to maintain and further develop high standards of practice, through co-operative work and peer supervision with other Psychological Professions within and outside the company.
- To be aware of and adhere to company policies and procedures.
Training and Staff Development
- To agree a plan for personal development with senior managers and participate in an Annual Reviews

Person specification
Experience
Essential
- NMC pin holder (no restrictions present)
- A minimum of 1 years experience in a clinical setting
- Experience of work across service settings and agencies.
- Experience in involvement in innovation or change
- Experience of working in a secure environment
- Skills & Abilities
- Problem/dispute resolution skills.
- Effective negotiation/ mediation skills.
- Excellent relational/ engagement skills with the client group who present severe and complex mental health problems.
- Build positive relationships with children
