This is a chance to start a career in pharmaceutical manufacturing while earning a nationally recognised qualification. As an Assistant Technical Officer in our Radiopharmacy, you’ll join train on the job while completing a Level 3 Science Manufacturing Technician (Pharmaceutical) apprenticeship. On successful completion you’ll be eligible for professional registration with the Science Council as a Registered Science Technician (RSciTech).

You’ll be joining a Radiopharmacy team of 27 staff pharmacists, scientists and technicians organised across production, clinical trials and quality assurance (QA). The post reports to the Chief Technician and is accountable to the Chief Pharmacist. Day to day, you’ll work most closely with the technician team, who will be your main colleagues as you learn the role.

Main duties of the job

The RMH Radiopharmacy is a licensed GMP manufacturing unit producing radioactive medicines used to diagnose and treat cancer patients. Working under the guidance of the Chief Technician, you’ll learn to: •    Prepare, dispense, label and distribute radiopharmaceuticals using aseptic technique in a Grade A cleanroom environment •    Carry out environmental monitoring, validation and cleaning of the cleanroom suite and equipment •    Manage stock and starting materials, ensuring correct storage and rotation •    Record monitoring data accurately and support the department’s quality management system.

  • Assist in the maintenance of the Radiopharmacy Cleanroom Suite as defined in Good Manufacturing Practice (Rules and Guidance for Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Distributors 2017 – ‘The Orange Guide’) and to comply with requirements of our Specials and IMP licenses. 2.2    Become familiar with Standard Operating Procedures and COSHH forms for the Radiopharmacy. 2.3    Complete the in-house training programme and the in-house accreditation programme according to grade and responsibility. 2.4    Gain an in-depth knowledge and skill in the handling of Radiopharmaceuticals. 2.5    Assemble and spray and wipe products using aseptic technique in a grade A environment. 2.6    Dispense, label and assist in the distribution of Radiopharmaceuticals to couriers and internal teams.

What we’re looking for •    GCSEs (Grade C / 4 and above) in English and Maths, or equivalent Level 2 Functional Skills (or willingness to work towards them) •    A careful, conscientious approach with strong attention to detail •    The ability to work well in a busy team and communicate clearly •    Reliability, initiative and a genuine commitment to patient care •    Willingness to follow strict cleanroom procedures (note: make-up and jewellery are not permitted in the cleanroom suite) •    The role requires a satisfactory DBS check and the ability to pass departmental validations and accreditations

Essential

  • Eligible to undertake a government-funded apprenticeship (including residency and right-to-work requirements) and not already holding a qualification at the same or higher level in a closely related subject; genuine commitment to completing the Level 3 standard and end-point assessment.
  • Ability to work under pressure whilst maintaining accuracy and attention to detail
  • Adaptable and flexible, to be able to adapt to changes for example in procedures and practices
  • Patient Care; must be committed to safe and effective patient care
  • Demonstrate initiative: proactive and self-motivated

Education/Qualifications

Essential

  • GCSE level (Grade C/4+ in English and Maths) or Numeracy and Literacy functional skills level 2 (or equivalent), or willingness to work towards and achieve Level 2 English and Maths as part of the apprenticeship.

Essential

  • Ability to communicate effectively in clear English with members of the public and with other health care professionals
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and with staff at all levels
  • Time management / Organisational / Problem solving Skills; ability to priorities own workload and that of others and to manage own time effectively
  • Computer skills: ability to use Microsoft Office applications eg Word, Excel, Outlook
