This is a unique and exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and committed individual to take the lead clinical role in the Major Trauma Centre Psychology team at St Mary’s Hospital, London.
We are looking for an experienced psychologist to shape and lead the integrated psychological model of care, working in partnership with the London Major Trauma Psychology Network, and the Major Trauma team.
Major Trauma Psychology teams were created at each of London’s four major trauma centres in 2023. This lead role will help support the implementation and ongoing development of inpatient and outpatient screening and treatment pathways for survivors of major trauma. As well as an active clinical role, the postholder will provide line management, clinical supervision, and training to other psychologists working within the MTC pathways.
The post-holder will be a senior member of the Clinical Health Psychology & Neuropsychology department and be the department’s clinical lead for Major Trauma Psychology.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will have experience in working in medical settings as part of an MDT as well as in managing and supervising other psychologists.
The main duties include, but are not limited to:
- Provide clinical and management support to the Major Trauma psychology team
- Maintain links and clinical oversight with the Major Trauma paediatric psychology service to support consistency of implementation and data recording
- Along with data analyst colleagues, support the recording and reporting Psychology data and evaluation framework for use on the MTC
- Design and deliver education and training to the MTC Trauma psychology teams, the MTC MDTs and for services on the wider NWL care pathways, where appropriate
- Chair the local NWL London Trauma Psychology Network and develop relevant local links - Represent St Mary’s Major Trauma psychology team at the pan-London Psychological Trauma Network
- Contribute to the coordination and delivery of the psychological response to major incidents in London

- Ability to develop and maintain a therapeutic relationship.
- Skills in application of psychological interventions in a specialist area (e.g. adapting CBT and third wave approaches for medical settings)
- Ability to identify, provide and promote appropriate means of support to carers and staff exposed to highly distressing situations.
- Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team and contribute to effective team functioning.
- Ability to demonstrate leadership, management and influencing skills.
Knowledge
Essential
- Doctoral level knowledge of clinical psychology including highly developed knowledge of health psychology, rehabilitation, lifespan developmental psychology, models of psychopathology, clinical neuropsychology, and two or more distinct psychological therapies.
- Evidence of continuing training in psychological practice through formal post-doctoral training (diploma/evidenced portfolio or equivalent), OR a combination of specialist short courses
- Knowledge of legislation and its implications for both clinical practice and professional management in relation to the client group and mental health issues.
Experience
Essential
- Assessed experience of working as a qualified clinical psychologist for a minimum of five years, within a directly relevant area of specialism
- Experience of highly specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients with a range of psychological needs of a complex nature following physical injury or in the context of a complex medical condition.
- Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting with the full range of clinical severity across the full range of care settings including outpatient, community, primary care, in-patient and residential care settings including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
- Experience of teaching and training non-psychologist colleagues.
- Experience of supervising other qualified psychologists.
- Experience of working with, and addressing issues of diversity, including experience of working with a multicultural framework.
Desirable
- Experience of representing the profession in local policy forum.
- Experience of recruiting psychologists
- Experience of working in an acute physical health hospital setting providing psychology input.
Qualifications
Essential
- Post-graduate doctoral level training in applied psychology.
- Registered with the HCPC as a Practitioner Psychologist.
- Completion of formal training in supervision
- Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the HCPC and British Psychological Society
Desirable
- Completion of post-doctoral training in relevant area.
Other Requirements
Essential
- Able to contain and work with organisational stress and to help others to manage their own stress.
- Interest in models of service delivery and an ability to articulate the value added by clinical health psychology services within the context of multi disciplinary settings.
- A commitment to the evaluation of services and a wish to continue to develop expertise in the service area.
- This is an onsite role at a large acute hospital and involves frequent standing and walking around the site e.g. from ward to office to outpatient dept.
