We are seeking an experienced Programme Director to lead and deliver a comprehensive transformation of patient flow across our UEC pathways for both admitted and non-admitted patients across both the Princess Royal & Orpington Hospitals. Working alongside the Clinical Director for Flow and other members of the flow team this role will be accountable for the planning, delivery, reporting and evaluation of the Sites Patient Flow programme. The postholder will be responsible for working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, creating and communicating a clear vision of our ambition to improve patient and staff experience, patient flow and supporting improved ED performance and reduction in Long Length of Stay that can adversely impact on patient outcomes.
Main duties of the job
Establish a consistent, standardised approach to patient flow across sites, specialties and teams, embedding clinically led and operationally owned improvements that become part of business-as-usual delivery.
Improve Emergency Department performance and system responsiveness by addressing flow constraints across the entire patient pathway and supporting earlier, safe and efficient discharge through strengthened discharge processes and closer working with community and system partners.
Drive a shift towards prevention, ambulatory care, same-day emergency care and community-based services where clinically appropriate, reducing avoidable admissions and inpatient demand.
Leverage digital tools, real-time data and analytics to support proactive flow management, decision-making and discharge planning. Strengthen partnership working across organisational boundaries to align capacity, demand and pathway design.
Deliver measurable improvements in length of stay, ED performance, discharge timeliness, patient, and staff experience, while fostering a culture of continuous improvement that enables teams to test, learn, scale and sustain effective flow initiatives.
- Deliver a step change in patient flow across acute pathways, improving timeliness, safety and patient experience for both admitted and non-admitted patients. Reduce long lengths of stay and unwarranted variation by ensuring patients receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

Essential
- • Programme Management & project management demonstrated at senior management level.
- • Team player with a ‘can do’ Attitude Ability to use experience to deliver informed decisions to a wide range of stakeholders
- • Able to take difficult and challenging decisions that support strategic aims and long-term vision.
Knowledge and Experience
Essential
- • Experience of working at senior level in a large complex delivering transformation programmes in an NHS setting.
- • Operational management experience in an NHS setting Track record of programme delivery at Director/Senior management level, including exposure at Board level.
- • Experience of forging relationships with NHSE, ICB and other external bodies and a track record of gaining support and funding
Education and Qualifications
Essential
- • Educated to Master’s degree level or equivalent experience and competencies or extensive relevant senior experience
- • Qualified at practitioner level of a recognised programme/project management methodology (Prince 2 / MSP)
