This role is responsible for managing clinical placement capacity for pre-registration nursing and midwifery students across Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, ensuring placements meet NMC standards and support high-quality learning. It involves close collaboration with the University of Worcester and other HEIs to allocate placements equitably, maintain a live register of mentors, assessors, and supervisors, and oversee reviews and reporting to regulatory bodies. The postholder leads a team of clinical educators, acts as a clinical and educational role model, and engages in clinical practice monthly to ensure placements remain relevant, supportive, and aligned with safe, effective patient care.

Main duties of the job

  • To manage clinical placement capacity for pre-registration students of nursing and midwifery across Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.
  • To liaise with the University of Worcester and other HEIs in the allocation and management of clinical placements ensuring equity and parity.
  • To oversee and manage the live register of active mentors in line with NMC requirements.
  • To ensure adequate number of practice Assessors & Supervisors in line with NMC requirements.
  • To participate in NMC and University reviews of placement provision on behalf of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals.
  • To ensure effective lines of communication between the Trust and Universities placing students.
  • To provide statistical data and reports to HEE as required.
  • To manage a team of clinical educators and be responsible for recruitment, disciplinary matters and personal development of the team.
  • To act as a clinical and educational role model.
  • To participate in clinical practice for a minimum of 1 day per month.
  • Working collaboratively with the University of Worcester and other Universities in providing clinical placements for pre-registration nursing and midwifery in line with NMC standards to ensure students have the clinical knowledge and skills to provide safe and effective patient care.
  • To work flexibly to facilitate and promote appropriate and quality learning environments within an acute setting.

Job responsibilities

Key Duties:

Professional

  • Collaborate with education providers to ensure learning environments are reviewed as required.
  • Act as a resource for all clinical staff and students, and to advise accordingly.
  • To comply with all relevant WAH Policies & Procedures in exercising the duties of the role.
  • To actively participate and contribute towards the setting and achievement of personal development plan and objectives for the team.
  • To carry out responsibilities in such a way as to minimise the risk of harm to children, young people and vulnerable adults, promoting their welfare and raising any concerns in a timely manner in accordance with the Trust's policies relating to safeguarding.
  • To participate in the recruitment and selection of pre-registration students.

Managerial

  • To manage a team of Practice Educators, including managing priorities, work plans, performance management, PDRs and disciplinary measures.
  • Responsible for efficient and effective use of resources. To manage time effectively to meet project outcomes.
  • Care for equipment and supplies within the sphere of responsibility.
  • Maintain accurate written and computerised records.
  • To provide progress reports and statistical returns to HEE and HEI on and clinical placement activity as appropriate.
  • To maintain accurate current records and progress reports on individual projects and initiatives.
  • To ensure that staff managed by the post holder comply with Trust policies and procedures taking appropriate action where and when required.

Leadership

  • To assess development needs and create a culture of reflective practice.
  • Be aware of NHS initiatives and contribute to change management.
  • Ensure Trust policies and guidelines are adhered to and regular updating of staff takes place.
  • To maintain the high standards of the department by contributing towards individual and team objectives.
  • To work as an effective part of the team.

Training, Education and Development

  • To deliver and facilitate training and education to health care staff and pre-registration nursing and midwifery students in clinical and classroom settings.
  • To be aware of the outcome of the educational audits and work with CEs and managers and tutors to develop and implement resultant action plans.
  • To contribute to the design, planning and implementation of learning programmes for students, Practice Assessors and Supervisors.
  • To contribute to the overall evaluation of learning programmes, designing and/or implementing evaluation strategies that determine the effectiveness of practice learning experience.
