Job overview
NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group (UHL Group) Trust wishes to appoint a Post-CCT Fellow in Sleep and Ventilation.
We are delighted to offer the opportunity of a one-year post-CCT training opportunity in Sleep and Ventilation Medicine at our highly specialised unit at Aintree Hospital.
Applications from candidates wishing to work less than full time will be considered.
The appointee will be based primarily at the Aintree University Hospital site, it is possible that some clinical activity may be delivered on other Trust sites detailed above after discussion with the appointee. Duties will be undertaken in conjunction with the other Consultant Respiratory Physicians on this site.
Applicants are required to be fully registered with the General Medical Council, with licence to practise, and are required to hold membership of the Royal College of Physicians UK (or equivalent). They should be listed on the Specialist Register for Respiratory Medicine, or be due to be registered within six months of the date of appointment.
Main duties of the job
During the fellowship year, the job plan will closely mirror that of a substantive consultant. The successful candidate will join the consultant on-call rota and participate in post-take ward rounds.
The primary aim of the fellowship is to equip the doctor with the knowledge, skills, and experience required for a highly specialised consultant role. During the first six months, time will be divided between inpatient and outpatient work. Of the inpatient component, approximately ten weeks will be spent in a supernumerary capacity within the ventilation ward team, together with two to three weeks of post-take activity.
During the second six months, the fellow will spend approximately ten weeks leading the Ventilation Unit, with support and supervision always available from an experienced consultant colleague. This period will also include two to three weeks of post-take activity.
This fellowship offers an excellent opportunity to gain advanced clinical, leadership, and service development experience within a well-established tertiary Sleep and Ventilation service, providing an ideal bridge between specialty training and a substantive consultant appointment.
It is expected that the appointee will participate in the Respiratory on call rota (currently approximately 1 in 16 weeknights and 1 in 8 weekends 2 consultants working).
Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Job Plan
- The timetable is based on a 10 PA job plan including 0.7PA for respiratory on-call duties within the 10 PAs, and 1.5 supporting PAs. Time off is given in lieu of any work carried outside of these times including a bank holiday
- An indicative timetable of the fixed sessions is described below. Actual timings of these fixed sessions in the week are negotiable and dependent upon clinic room availability, the overall needs of the respiratory medicine service etc.
- On an annualised job plan there would be between 80 and 100 outpatient sessions, although more could be carried out with an agreed job plan with additional APAs.
- There are 1.5 SPAs identified in the job plan. Newly appointed consultants are offered 1.5 SPAs as a given to deliver core SPA tasks, an additional SPA may be available subsequently if other responsibilities/duties are undertaken, these are discretionary/performance managed against clearly agreed set objectives. These objectives will be defined after appointment in consultation with the Clinical Director.
